چکیده

We describe X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton of 18Mgroup ∼ 1–6× 10 13 M⊙, z ∼ 0.05 galaxy groups from the Zurich ENvironmental Study. The X-ray data aim at establishing the frequency and properties, unaffected by host galaxy dilution and obscuration, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in central and satellite galaxies, also as a function of halo-centric distance. X-ray point-source detections are reported for 22 of the 177 galaxies, down to a sensitivity level of f0.5−8 keV ∼ 5 × 10 −15 erg cm s, corresponding to a limiting luminosity of L0.5−8 keV ∼ 3× 10 40 erg s. With the majority of the X-ray sources attributed to AGNs of low-to-moderate levels (L/LEdd 10 ), we discuss the detection rate in the context of the occupation of AGNs to halos of this mass scale and redshift and compare the structural and morphological properties between AGN-active and non-active galaxies. At galaxy mass scales <10 M⊙, central galaxies appear to be a factor of ∼4 more likely to host AGNs than satellite galaxies of similar mass. This effect, coupled with the tendency for AGNs to be hosted by massive galaxies, explains the (weak) trend for AGNs to be preferentially found in the inner parts of group halos, with no detectable trend with halo-centric distance in the frequency of AGNs within the satellite population. Finally, our data indicate that the rate of decline with redshift of AGN activity in galaxy groups matches that of the global AGN population, indicating that either AGN activity occurs preferentially in group halos or that the evolution rate is independent of halo mass.

On the Nature of X-ray Bright Optically Normal Galaxies

Recent X-ray surveys by Chandra and XMM-Newton have revealed a population of X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies (XBONGs) at moderate redshifts. By analogy with nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, we propose that many XBONGs are powered by an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) plus an outer standard thin accretion disk. The absence of optical/UV activity in XBONGs...

Chandra and Xmm-newton Observations of a Sample of Low-redshift Fri and Frii Radio-galaxy Nuclei

We present spectral results, from Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, of a sample of 22 low-redshift (z < 0.1) radio galaxies, and consider whether the core emission originates from the base of a relativistic jet, an accretion flow, or contains contributions from both. We find correlations between the unabsorbed X-ray, radio, and optical fluxes and luminosities of FRI-type radio-galaxy cores, ...

High Resolution X - Ray Spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 Galaxies

X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 galaxies provides an excellent probe of the circumnuclear environment in active galactic nuclei. The grating experiments on both Chandra and XMM-Newton have now provided the first high resolution spectra of several of the brightest Seyfert 2's. We present Chandra HETG data on Markarian 3, and XMM-Newton RGS data on NGC 1068. In both cases, the spectra are dominat...

XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATIONS OF RED AGNs

XMM-Newton spectra of five red 2MASS active galactic nuclei (AGNs), selected from a sample observed by Chandra to be relatively X-ray bright and to cover a range of hardness ratios, confirm the presence of substantial absorbing material in three sources with optical classifications ranging from type 1 to type 2. A flat (hard) powerlaw continuum is observed in the other two. The combination of X...

XMM - Newton observations of the starburst merger galaxies NGC 3256 & NGC 3310

We present XMM-Newton EPIC observations of the two nearby starburst merger galaxies NGC 3256 & NGC 3310. The broad-band (0.3–10 keV) integrated X-ray emission from both galaxies shows evidence of multi-phase thermal plasmas plus an underlying hard non-thermal power-law continuum. NGC 3256 is well-fit with a model comprising two MEKAL components (kT =0.6/0.9 keV) plus a hard power-law (Γ=2), whi...
