Crinoid stalk flexibility: theoretical predictions and fossil stalk postures
نویسنده
چکیده
Flexibilities in Lower Mississippian crinoid stalks were inferred from preserved postures and shown not to conform with predictions of a cantilever beam model. Flexibilities were not correlated with hard-part characters such as stalk diameter, stalk length, or columnal height. The lack of correspondence between the predictions of the cantilever model and observed flexibilities implies that the niost likely control of stalk flexibility is the ligament, more specifically, its non-constant, mutable properties. Although a few Lower Mississippian crinoids, such as (21bertsocrinus, Plntycrinites, and Camptocrinus, have enhanced flexibility achieved by radical modifications of columnal facet morphology, this study has failed to identify any general morphological characters that consistently predict flexibility. It appears that skeletal morphology is a poor guide to stalk flexibility; mutable collagenous tissue is the key. Disarticulation patterns in Ordovician crinoids: Implications for the evolutionary history of connective tissue in the Crinoidea
Taphonomic information is examined to evaluate the early history of connective tissues in the Crinoidea. The pattern of stalk segmentation of Middle and Late Ordovician crinoids is consistent with the two-ligament (intercolumnal and through-going ligaments) pattern present in living isocrinid crinoids and interpreted for fossil isocrinids, holocrinids, and Lower Mississippian crinoids. A single...

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

The study was conducted to investigate the ge-netic basis of kenaf fiber yield and quality In two sets of generations derived from 1X51 x Gha-na07 and Gregg x Ghana07 crosses. Analysis of generation means using weighted least squares procedure was performed on stalk dry weight, bast percentage, days to flowering, plant height, and basal stalk diameter . Analysis of generation means revealed tha...
متن کاملPreliminary study of the physical and mechanical properties of soya stalk flour/high density polyethylene composite
The use of agriculture residues as filler in composites is increasing due to their strength, abundance and low cost. Soya stalks show promising renewable natural fiber. In polyethylene composites the physical and mechanical properties (flexural resistance, tensile, impacted absorbed energy, water uptake and thickness swelling) was examined at different composites. The results showed that, the m...
