The role of calcium in the regulation of melatonin biosynthesis in the retina.
نویسنده
چکیده
Vertebrate retina rhythmically produces melatonin, a hormone involved in the regulation of several intraocular processes cued by environmental lighting conditions. Calcium ions play an important role in the induction process of serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT), a key regulatory enzyme in melatonin biosynthetic pathway. The physiological, i.e. nocturnal, increase of NAT activity in the retina depends on transmembrane transport of Ca2+ through the L-type of voltage-sensitive calcium channels. It is suggested that Ca2+ may regulate NAT activity indirectly, by affecting the intracellular cyclic AMP content, which is, in turn, critical in the regulation of melatonin biosynthesis. The mode and mechanisms of Ca2+ action on processes governing melatonin formation in the retina are discussed.

Background: Melatonin as the major hormone produced by the pineal gland has a significant role in mammalian reproduction. In this study the efficacy of melatonin coadministration with nicotine on mouse follicogenesis was investigated. Materials and Methods: A total of 32 Female adult NMRI mice were divided into four groups. The control group (n=8) received vehicle, group 2 (n=8) received nicoti...
متن کاملP 60: The Effect of Melatonin as a Therapeutic Goal on Multiple Sclerosis Through Immune Processes
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system which is accompanied by demyelinating the neurons. The imbalance between the T cell effectors and T cell regulators is thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted by pineal gland which has an important role in circadian rhythm and immune-modulatory effects. Melatonin ...

In humans, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (melatonin), a neurohormone widely found in plants and animal sources, is synthesized from serotonin primarily by the pineal gland. However, it it is also produced in a number of other areas, e.g. the gastrointestinal tract. Melatonin regulates various biological and physiologic body functions and its role in the regulation of circadian rhythms, particula...
متن کاملThe role of dopamine in the regulation of melatonin biosynthesis in vertebrate retina.
The vertebrate retina rhythmically synthesizes melatonin, a hormone involved in the regulation of several intraocular processes cued by environmental lighting conditions. The rhythm of retinal melatonin production, with maximal synthesis at night in darkness, is driven by the photoperiodic environment to which animals are exposed, and is generated by an endogenous circadian clock(s). This artic...
