It Appears That Four Colors Suffice: A Historical Overview of the Four-Color Theorem

Certainly any mathematical theorem concerning the coloring of maps would be relevant and widely applicable to modern-day cartography. As for the FourColor Theorem, nothing could be further from the truth. Kenneth May, a twentieth century mathematics historian, explains that “books on cartography and the history of map-making do not mention the four-color property, though they often discuss vari...

A Non-algorithmic Proof of the Four Color Conjecture

In this article, the Four Color Conjecture has been discussed from a standpoint outside the graph theoretic realm. It has first been shown that in a map with four regions, every region connected to every other, at least one of the regions would be enveloped. With the help of this result, it has been shown that at most three colors are needed to color the boundary regions of a planar map. Finall...

An Update on the Four-Color Theorem

848 NOTICES OF THE AMS VOLUME 45, NUMBER 7 E very planar map of connected countries can be colored using four colors in such a way that countries with a common boundary segment (not just a point) receive different colors. It is amazing that such a simply stated result resisted proof for one and a quarter centuries, and even today it is not yet fully understood. In this article I concentrate on ...

2 2 D ec 1 99 8 A Note on the Gauss Map of Complete Nonorientable Minimal Surfaces

We construct complete nonorientable minimal surfaces whose Gauss map omits two points of RP 2 . This result proves that Fujimoto’s theorem is sharp in nonorientable case.

On Map Representations of DNA

We have constructed graphical (qualitative and visual) representations of DNA sequences as 2D maps and their numerical (quantitative and computational) analysis. The maps are obtained by transforming the four-letter sequences (where letters represent the four nucleic bases) via a spiral representation over triangular and square cells grids into a four-color map. The so constructed maps are then...
