Discrimination between Nonorthogonal Two-photon Polarization States *
نویسنده
چکیده
It is shown that generalized measurements, required for optimally discriminating between nonorthogonal joint polarization states of two indistinguishable photons, can be realized with the help of polarization-dependent twophoton absorption and by means of sum-frequency generation. Optimization schemes are investigated with respect to minimizing the error probability in inferring the states, as well as with respect to maximizing the probability of success for unambiguous discrimination. Moreover, an implementation of error-minimizing discrimination between N symmetric single-photon states is studied. The latter can be used to extract information from the inconclusive results occurring in unambiguous discrimination between three symmetric two-photon polarization states. 03.65.Bz, 03.67-a, 42.50.Dv Typeset using REVTEX ∗Contribution at the 8th Central-European Workshop on Quantum Optics, April 27 30, 2001

متن کاملLinear-Optical Implementation of Perfect Discrimination between Single-bit Unitary Operations
For quantum computing and quantum information processing, one important task is the discrimination of quantum states and unitary operations. This is strongly related to quantum nonorthogonality, which is one of the basic features of quantum mechanics. Since the pioneering work of Helstrom [1] on quantum hypothesis testing, the problem of discriminating nonorthogonal quantum states has attracted...

An important task for quantum-information processing is optimal discrimination between two nonorthogonal quantum states, which until now has been realized only optically. Here, we present and compare experimental realizations of optimal quantum measurements for distinguishing between two nonorthogonal quantum states encoded in a single (14)N nuclear spin at a nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond....
متن کاملOptical realization of optimal unambiguous discrimination for pure and mixed quantum states.
Quantum mechanics forbids deterministic discrimination among nonorthogonal states. Nonetheless, the capability to distinguish nonorthogonal states unambiguously is an important primitive in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally implement generalized measurements in an optical system and demonstrate the first optimal unambiguous discrimination between three nonorthogona...
متن کاملA general approach to physical realization of unambiguous quantum states discrimination
We present a general scheme to realize the POVMs for the unambiguous discrimination of quantum states (pure or mixed). If any set of pure states are prepared as the linear combinations of single-photon states in N dimensional Hilbert space and the POVM to unambiguously distinguish between them has been determined, a device to perform the task can be set up with at most N lossless beam splitters...
