Summation of rapid tactile stimuli in parietal lobe disease.

چکیده
The perception threshold for trains of rapid tactile pulses, applied to the index finger, has been measured in patients with parietal lobe lesions and in patients with median nerve lesions. The former patients had increased perception thresholds for single tactile pulses on the abnormal side. With successively prolonged pulse trains, the threshold decreased exponentially to reach a stable level after 150-400 ms. In contrast, the median nerve patients had increased perception thresholds for tactile pulses irrespective of pulse train duration.

Tactile apraxia: unimodal apractic disorder of tactile object exploration associated with parietal lobe lesions.
Tactile apraxia is characterized by an isolated disturbance of hand movements for use of and interaction with an object (transitive movements) in the presence of preserved intransitive movements (movements without use of an object, for example repetitive movements or gestures). It is, however, still unclear whether motor and sensory abnormalities represent causal or associated features of tacti...
متن کاملTactile priming modulates the activation of the fronto-parietal circuit during tactile angle match and non-match processing: an fMRI study
The repetition of a stimulus task reduces the neural activity within certain cortical regions responsible for working memory (WM) processing. Although previous evidence has shown that repeated vibrotactile stimuli reduce the activation in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, whether the repeated tactile spatial stimuli triggered the priming effect correlated with the same cortical region remain...
متن کاملParietal cortex involvement in the localization of tactile and noxious mechanical stimuli: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.
The cortical system underlying perceptual ability to localize tactile and noxious cutaneous stimuli in humans is still incompletely understood. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to transiently interfere with the function of the parietal cortex, at different times after the beginning of noxious or non-noxious mechanical stimulation of the hairy skin overlying the dorsal surface of ...
متن کاملTactile perceptual rivalry and tactile-amorphosynthesis in the localization of cerebral lesions; with special reference to parietal lobes.
Introduction Recently attention of neurologists has been directed to the clinical value of using bilateral simultaneous and ipsilateral double stimuli in testing cutaneous sensations. If two similar stimuli are applied simultaneously on the two sides of the body, eyes being closed, the patient announces that he feels the object only on the unaffected side. When each side is tested separately, t...
متن کاملTime-dependent activation of parieto-frontal networks for directing attention to tactile space. A study with paired transcranial magnetic stimulation pulses in right-brain-damaged patients with extinction.
Tactile extinction has been interpreted as an attentional disorder, closely related to hemineglect, due to hyperactivation of the unaffected hemisphere, resulting in an ipsilesional attentional bias. Paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques, with a subthreshold conditioning stimulus (CS) followed at various interstimulus intervals (ISIs) by a suprathreshold test stimulus (TS), ...
