Confusion errors in astrometry and counterpart association

چکیده

In very crowded fields, the modulation of the background by the sea of unresolved faint sources induces centroid shifts. The errors increase with the number of sources per beam. Even the most optimistic simulations of imaging data show that position errors can become severe (on the order of the beam size) at flux levels at which images contain 1/100 to 1/20 sources per beam, depending on the slope of the number-flux relation d log N/d log S. These problems are expected to be significant for recent observations of faint submillimeter sources and may be the reason that some sources appear to lack optical counterparts. The confusion limit on astrometry with SIM

An important requirement for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) is to carry out precision astrometry in crowded fields. This capability is crucial, for example, to accurately measure proper motions of bright stars in nearby galaxies. From such measurements, one can obtain distance estimates, explore the dynamics of these systems and measure the mass of the Milky Way itself. In this paper we...

Accurate optical-to-radio registration of Seyfert galaxies with HST images Absolute astrometry of HST images?

We propose a method to obtain accurate absolute astrometry of Hubble Space Telescope images. Ground based images are used to linkHST images to standard astrometric stars defining the optical frame of reference. The method has been used to register optical images of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5929 to the corresponding radio maps, allowing the exploration of the relationship between radio and optic...

Principles of statistical astrometry

We present a coherent scheme of ‘statistical astrometry’ for high-precision measurements. Statistical astrometry provides methods and tools for treating quantitatively the overall statistical effect of the presence of many individually unresolved or unmodelled astrometric binaries in a stellar ensemble. The non-linear motions of the photo-centers of these binaries give rise to deviations from l...

Sub-Microarcsecond Astrometry with SIM-Lite: A Testbed-based Performance Assessment

SIM-Lite is an astrometric interferometer being designed for sub-microarcsecond astrometry, with a wide range of applications from searches for Earth-analogs to determining the distribution of dark matter. SIM-Lite measurements can be limited by random and systematic errors, as well as astrophysical noise. In this paper we focus on instrument systematic errors and report results from SIM-Lite’s...

Precision Astrometry with Adaptive Optics

We investigate the limits of ground-based astrometry with adaptive optics using the core of the Galactic globular cluster M5. Adaptive optics systems provide near diffraction-limit imaging with the world’s largest telescopes. The substantial improvement in both resolution and signal-to-noise ratio enables high-precision astrometry from the ground. We describe the dominant systematic errors that...
