Earth dips into the red

چکیده

Beginning on October 9 and continuing to the end of the year, the world will be living beyond its ecological means according to researchers who have created the concept of an 'ecological footprint'. They believe it shows that, from that day, humans will have already consumed the total amount of new resources nature will produce this year. Each year the Global Footprint Network calculates humanity's demand on cropland, pasture, forests and fisheries and compares it with the ability of these ecosystems to generate resources and absorb wastes. Such Ecological Footprint accounting can be used to determine the exact date humans begin running an annual ecological deficit. Designated World Overshoot Day, the researchers estimated demand began outstripping supply on October 9. The causes of Overshoot are simple but significant. In any given year if trees are cut down faster than they can grow back, then forests become smaller than before. If more fish are caught each year than spawn, then there will be fewer fish. The consequences of humans' accumulating ecological debt also include " global climate change, species extinctions, insecure energy supplies, water News focus According to one index, humans have already consumed a year's worth of the world's renewable resources by the beginning of last month. Nigel Williams reports on the growth in borrowed time. Earth dips into the red shortages and crop failures " , the researchers say. The first calculation of Overshoot Day was in 1987, when the date was December 19. Today, with Overshoot Day on October 9, the global Ecological Footprint is almost 30 per cent larger than the planet's biocapacity. In other words, it now takes more than one year and three months for the Earth to replenish what we use in 12 months, they calculate. Keeping track of the compound effect of humanity's consumption of natural resources and generation of waste is one key to achieving sustainability, the researchers argue. As long as people do not know how much of nature's capacity humans use or how resource use compares with existing stocks, Under pressure: Humans are creating an increasingly large ecological footprint on the planet's natural resources.

A Method for Characterization of Three-phase Unbalanced Dips from Recorded Voltage Waveshapes

Abstract: A proposal is presented for characterization of voltage dips as experienced by threephase load. The authors propose this method for inclusion in international standards and recommendations. The method is based on the well-proven theory of symmetrical components. The primary result of the method is a so-called "characteristic magnitude" which corresponds to the magnitude (remaining vol...

Parameterization studies of the properties of the X - ray dips for Low Mass X - ray binary X 1916 - 053

The ultra-compact Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) X1916-053, composed of a neutron star and a semi-degenerated white dwarf, exhibits periodic X-ray dips with variable width and depth. We have developed new methods to parameterize the dip to systematically study its variations. This helps to further understand binary and accretion disk behaviors. The RXTE 1998 observations clearly show a 4.87d peri...

Understanding microbialite morphology using a comprehensive suite of three-dimensional analysis tools.

Microbialites can have complex morphologies that preserve clues to ancient microbial ecology. However, extracting and interpreting these clues is challenging due to both the complexity of microbial structures and the difficulties of connecting morphology to microbial processes. Fenestrate microbialites from the 2521±3 Ma Gamohaan Formation, South Africa, have intricate structures composed of th...

Relic Neutrino Absorption Spectroscopy

Resonant annihilation of extremely high-energy cosmic neutrinos on big-bang relic anti-neutrinos (and vice versa) into Z-bosons leads to sizable absorption dips in the neutrino flux to be observed at Earth. The high-energy edges of these dips are fixed, via the resonance energies, by the neutrino masses alone. Their depths are determined by the cosmic neutrino background density, by the cosmolo...

Antioxidant and antibacterial activity of red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii against pathogenic bacteria

Seaweeds can produce variety of bioactive components for the benefits of humans. Malaysia is one of the countries to produce red seaweeds, which are popular secondary metabolites. Kappaphycus species, largest tropical red algae exhibit the high growth rate. It was reported that its biomass can grow double in just 15 to 30 days. Therefore, this investigation emphasized on two extraction...
