Three principles for canonical quantum gravity

چکیده
We outline three principles that should guide us in the construction of a theory of canonical quantum gravity: 1) di eomorphism invariance, 2) implementing the proper dynamics and related constraint algebra, 3) local Lorentz invariance. We illustrate each of them with its role in model calculations in loop quantum gravity. ∗ Corresponding author. Email: [email protected]. Tel/Fax: +1 225 578 0464.

Renormalization of 3D Quantum Gravity from Matrix Models
Lorentzian simplicial quantum gravity is a non-perturbatively defined theory of quantum gravity which predicts a positive cosmological constant. Since the approach is based on a sum over space-time histories, it is perturbatively non-renormalizable even in three dimensions. By mapping the three-dimensional theory to a two-matrix model with ABAB interaction we show that both the cosmological and...
متن کاملCanonical analysis of cosmological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point
Wolfgang Kummer was a pioneer of two-dimensional gravity and a strong advocate of the first order formulation in terms of Cartan variables. In the present work we apply Wolfgang Kummer's philosophy, the 'Vienna School approach', to a specific three-dimensional model of gravity, cos-mological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point. Exploiting a new Chern–Simons representation we perfo...
متن کاملThree principles of quantum gravity in the condensed matter approach
Research on quantum gravity (QG) has historically relied on appeals to guiding principles. This essay frames three such principles within the context of the condensed matter approach to QG. I first identify two distinct versions of this approach, and then consider the extent to which the principles of asymptotic safety, relative locality, and holography are supported by these versions. The gene...
متن کاملSimplifying the spectral analysis of the volume operator
The volume operator plays a central role in both the kinematics and dynamics of canonical approaches to quantum gravity which are based on algebras of generalized Wilson loops. We introduce a method for simplifying its spectral analysis, for quantum states that can be realized on a cubic three-dimensional lattice. This involves a decomposition of Hilbert space into sectors transforming accordin...
متن کاملWhy the Quantum Must Yield to Gravity
After providing an extensive overview of the conceptual elements – such as Einstein’s ‘hole argument’ – that underpin Penrose’s proposal for gravitationally induced quantum state reduction, the proposal is constructively criticised. Penrose has suggested a mechanism for objective reduction of quantum states with postulated collapse time τ = h̄/∆E , where ∆E is an ill-definedness in the gravitati...
