Progressive Covering of the ADC during Dipping in the LMXB XBT0748-676

چکیده
We report results of analysis of the ASCA observation of 1993, May 7th of the dipping LMXB source XBT0748-676, and propose a new explanation of the spectral evolution in dipping in this source. The behavior of the source was very unusual in that, in the band 1 3 keV, dipping extended around most of the orbital cycle with almost no non-dip intensity evident and the depth of dipping reached 100%. At higher energies, eg 3 10 keV, the depth of dipping was less than 100%, and there were marked increases in hardness in dipping. We show that the non-dip and dip spectra in several intensity bands are well fitted using the same physical model that we have previously shown gives good explanations of several dipping sources, consisting of point source blackbody emission from the neutron star, plus extended Comptonised emission from the accretion disk corona (ADC), with progressive covering of the ADC during dipping. Best fit values of kTbb = 1.99±0.16 keV and power law photon index Γ = 1.70±0.16 are found. The strong excess below 1 keV was well fitted by a Gaussian line at 0.65 keV. In dipping, good fits were obtained by allowing it to be covered by the same progressive covering factor as the extended continuum emission, providing strong evidence that the line originates in the ADC. Our approach of applying the two-component model, and explicitly including progressive covering of the Comptonised emission, differs radically from the “absorbed plus unabsorbed” approach previously used extensively for XBT0748-676 and similar sources, in which the normalisation of the unabsorbed peak in dip spectra is allowed to decrease by a large factor in dipping. This decrease has often been attributed to the effects of electron scattering. By using our two-component model we show that the unabsorbed component is the uncovered fraction of the Comptonised emission, and in the band 1 10 keV, we do not need to invoke electron scattering to explain dipping. The broad-band X–ray spectrum of the dipping Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO0748–676
We present results of a 0.1-100 keV BeppoSAX observation of the dipping low-mass X-ray binary (LMXRB) EXO0748–676 performed in 2000 November. During the observation EXO0748–676 exhibited X-ray eclipses, type I X-ray bursts and dipping activity over a wide range of orbital phases. The 0.1–100 keV “dip– free”(ie. dipping and eclipsing intervals excluded) spectrum is complex, especially at low-ene...

We present results from analysis of the observation of the dipping, quasi-periodic bursting low mass X-ray binary XB1323-619 made with XMM-Newton in Jan., 2003. In spectral analysis of the non-dip, non-burst EPIC PN spectrum, a number of absorption lines were discovered, notably at 6.70 and 6.98 keV which we identify with scattering by high ionization state ions Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. Such feature...

We present results of an observation with Suzaku of the dipping, periodic bursting low mass X-ray binary XB 1323-619. Using the energy band 0.8-70 keV, we show that the source spectrum is well-described as the emission of an extended accretion disk corona, plus a small contribution of blackbody emission from the neutron star. The dip spectrum is well-fitted by the progressive covering model in ...

We present results of a detailed study of X-ray flaring in the Z-track source Sco X-1 in a highly superEddington state made using high quality Rossi-XTE data from the PCA and HEXTE instruments. The emission model successfully used to explain the dipping LMXB, and other classes of LMXB in recent years, was applied to study the physical evolution along the Z-track which remains a major problem. متن کاملX-Ray Eclipse Timing in the LMXB EXO0748-676
Orbital period changes are an important diagnostic for understanding low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) accretioninduced angular momentum exchange and overall system evolution. We present our most recent results for the eclipse timing of the LMXB EXO 0748−676. Since its discovery in 1985 it has apparently undergone three distinct orbital period “epochs", each characterized by a different orbital peri...
