Galaxy M 33 : A Geometric Distance

چکیده
We report on the results of a 14 year long VLBI study of proper motions in the IC 133 H 2 O maser source in the galaxy M33. The method of Ordered Motion Parallax was used to model the 3-dimensional structure and dynamics of IC 133 and obtain a distance estimate, 800 ± 180 kpc. Our technique for determining the distance to M33 is independent of calibrations common to other distance indicators, such as Cepheid Period-Luminosity relations, and therefore provides an important check for previous distance determinations.

A 4% geometric distance to the galaxy NGC4258 from orbital motions in a nuclear gas disk
The accurate measurement of extragalactic distances is a central challenge of modern astronomy, being required for any realistic description of the age, geometry and fate of the Universe. The measurement of relative extragalactic distances has become fairly routine, but estimates of absolute distances are rare. In the vicinity of the Sun, direct geometric techniques for obtaining absolute dista...

The cosmic distance scale largely depends on distance determinations to Local Group galaxies. In this sense, the Andromeda Galaxy (M 31) is a key rung to better constrain the cosmic distance ladder. A project was started in 1999 to firmly establish a direct and accurate distance to M 31 using eclipsing binaries (EBs). After the determination of the first direct distance to M 31 from EBs, the se...

We present deep V,I photometry of two 9.4 ′ × 9.4 ′ field in the outer regions of the M 33 galaxy. We obtain a robust detection of the luminosity of the Red Giant Branch Tip (I T RGB = 20.72 ± 0.08) from which we derived a new estimate of the distance modulus of M 33, (m − M) 0 = 24.64 ± 0.15, corresponding to a distance D = 847 ± 60 Kpc. By comparison of the color and magnitude of the observed...
متن کاملTowards a kinematic model of the Local Group
Measuring the proper motions and geometric distances of galaxies within the Local Group is very important for our understanding of its history, present state and future. Currently, proper motion measurements using optical methods are limited only to the closest companions of the Milky Way. However, given that VLBI provides the best angular resolution in astronomy and phasereferencing techniques...

The Moon behind the finger. Detection of the Canis Major galaxy in the background of galactic open clusters. ABSTRACT We report on the detection of Main Sequence and evolved stars belonging to the newly discovered Canis Major galaxy in the background of the open clusters NGC 2477, Tombaugh 1 and Berkeley 33. From the Color Magnitude Diagram of the galaxy as it appear in the background of NGC 24...
