A Brief Discussion On Demand-Side Network Externalities

نویسنده

  • ZELJKO PANIAN
چکیده

Network externalities exist when some people bear costs that they are not paid or compensated for, or when they get benefits that they do not pay for. Externalities may be positive or negative, depending on the effects they produce. There are also supply-side and demand-side network externalities. The paper discusses some aspects of demand-side network externalities, particularly when related to the use of the Internet, extranets and virtual organizations or communities. Key-Words: network externalities, demand-side externalities, Internet, extranet, virtual organization, virtual community

Network Externalities and the Coase Conjecture

This paper addresses two general questions. First, what is the eeect of market structure on the development of a network in a dynamic model with rational expectations? Secondly, is the intuition that network externalities arèeco-nomies of scale on the demand side' correct? These questions are examined in a model of durable goodproduction in the presence of network externalities. Two results are...

Network Externalities , Demand Inertia and Dynamic Pricing in an Experimental

This paper analyses dynamic pricing in markets with network externalities. Network externalities imply demand inertia, because the size of a network increases the usefulness of the product for consumers. Since past sales increase current demand, …rms have an incentive to set low introductory prices to be able to increase prices as their networks grow. However, in reality we observe decreasing p...

Feasibility study of presenting a dynamic stochastic model based on mixed integer second-order conic programming to solve optimal distribution network reconfiguration in the presence of resources and demand-side management

Nowadays, with the use of devices such as fossil distributed generation and renewable energy resources and energy storage systems that are operated at the level of distribution networks, the problem of optimal reconfiguration has faced major challenges, so any change in the power of this resources can have different results in reconfiguration. Similarly, load changes during the day can lead to ...

Network externalities and two-part tariffs in telecommunication markets

This article analyzes demand side particularities of telecommunications markets and their consequences for the market structure. I assume that telecommunications markets are characterized by two distinguishing features: (i) the efficacy of network externalities and (ii) the presence of two-part tariffs as a simple instrument of price discrimination. Then, the usual tendency to conformity establ...

A Non-substitution Theorem with Non-constant Returns to Scale and Externalities

An input-output model with non-constant returns to scale and externalities is presented, and it is shown that in this model, the non-substitution theorem is still valid. More precisely, the quantity side of the theorem, i.e., the proposition on efficiency, remains valid, while there can be no equilibrium prices independent of final demand.
