Quantifying the Basal Conditions of a Mountain Glacier Using a Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion: Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA
نویسنده
چکیده
Glacier dynamics are inextricably linked to the basal conditions of glaciers. Seismic reflection methods can image the glacier bed under certain conditions. However, where a seismically thin layer of material is present at the bed, traditional analyses may fail to fully characterize bed properties. We use a targeted full-waveform inversion algorithm to quantify the basal-layer parameters of a mountain glacier: thickness (d), P-wave velocity () and density (). We simultaneously invert for the seismic quality factor (Q) of the bulk glacier ice. The inversion seeks to minimize the difference between the data and a one-dimensional reflectivity algorithm using a gradient-based search with starting values initialized from a Monte Carlo scheme. We test the inversion algorithm on four basal layer synthetic data traces with 5% added Gaussian noise. The inversion retrieved thin-layer parameters within 10% of synthetic test parameters with the exception of seismic Q. For the seismic dataset from Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA, inversion results indicate a thin basal layer of debris-rich ice within the study area having mean velocity 4000 700m s, density 1900200 kgm and thickness

Diurnal water-pressure fluctuations: timing and pattern of termination below Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA
Observations from basal water-pressure sensors along the length of Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA, show that diurnal fluctuations of water pressure are seasonal and restricted to summer. Most notable about these fluctuations is their disappearance in the late summer and early autumn, long before the seasonal end of diurnal meltwater input. Here we present data documenting the end of diurnal water-p...

Continuous profiles of electromagnetic wave velocity and water content in glaciers: an example from Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA
We conducted two-dimensional continuous multi-offset georadar surveys on Bench Glacier, south-central Alaska, USA, to measure the distribution of englacial water. We acquired data with a multichannel 25MHz radar system using transmitter–receiver offsets ranging from 5 to 150m. We towed the radar system at 5–10 kmh with a snow machine with transmitter/receiver positions established by geodetic-g...

Equilibrium-Line Altitudes of Late Quaternary Glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain, Iran
Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of former glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain of the Zagros Mountain Range were reconstructed from glacial-geologic data on former ice limits by using various methods. In the study area various types of glacial landforms such as outwash fans, moraines and well developed glacial cirques are observed. The results suggest that ELA were depressed 1433 m below to prese...
