چکیده

We perform a two-dimensional molecular-dynamics study of a model for sheared bidisperse granular systems under conditions of simple shear and Poiseuille ow. We propose a mechanism for particle-size segregation based on the observation that segregation occurs if the viscous length scale introduced by a liquid in the system is smaller than of the order of the particle size. We show that the ratio of shear rate to viscosity must be small if one wants to nd size segregation. In this case the particles in the system arrange themselves in bands of big and small particles oriented along the direction of the ow. Similarly, in Poiseuille ow we nd the formation of particle bands. Here, in addition, the variety of time scales in the ow leads to an aggregation of particles in the zones of low shear rate and can suppress size segregation in these regions. The results have been veriied against simulations using a full Navier-Stokes description for the liquid.

Mixing and segregation rates in sheared granular materials.

The vertical size segregation of granular materials, a process commonly associated with the Brazil-nut effect, has generally been thought to proceed faster the greater the size difference of the particles. We experimentally investigate sheared dense bidisperse granular materials as a function of the size ratio of the two species and find that the mixing rate at low confining pressure behaves as...

CFD simulation for segregation behavior of a ternary mixture in a bubbling fluidized bed: effect of solid wall boundary condition

Abstract The effect of the solid–wall boundary condition on the segregation behavior of a sand ternary mixture differing in size but having the same proportion has been investigated in a gas–solid bubbling fluidized bed. A multi-fluid computational fluid dynamics model incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow has been used. The mass fraction profiles of the different-sized partic...

Asymmetric flux models for particle-size segregation in granular avalanches

Particle-size segregation commonly occurs in both wet and dry granular free-surface flows through the combined processes of kinetic sieving and squeeze expulsion. As the granular material is sheared downslope, the particle matrix dilates slightly and small grains tend to percolate down through the gaps, because they are more likely than the large grains to fit into the available space. Larger p...

Stress partition and microstructure in size-segregating granular flows.

When a granular mixture involving grains of different sizes is shaken, sheared, mixed, or left to flow, grains tend to separate by sizes in a process known as size segregation. In this study, we explore the size segregation mechanism in granular chute flows in terms of the pressure distribution and granular microstructure. Therefore, two-dimensional discrete numerical simulations of bidisperse ...
