Stellar Populations in Active Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
The role of stars and starbursts in AGN has been a recurring issue for nearly as long as AGN have been recognized as hosts of interesting phenomena. The heated “starburst versus monster” controversy of the 80’s and 90’s was gradually replaced by “starburst plus monster” studies, as observational work in the past decade has firmly established that accretion onto a super-massive black-hole and star-formation coexist in many galactic nuclei. Whereas the physical link between starbursts and AGN remains unclear, there remains no doubt that starbursts affect a number of properties traditionally associated to the AGN alone, such as the so called “featureless continuum”, emission line ratios and luminosities. This contribution glosses over some of the techniques used to diagnose stellar populations in AGN, focusing on recent results and how this type of work can lead us well beyond what became known as the starburst-AGN connection.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملStellar populations in active galactic nuclei
The relationship of an AGN to its host galaxy is one crucial question in the study of galaxy evolution. We present a method to estimate the stellar contribution in active galactic nuclei. We perform stellar population synthesis in the central regions of a sample of 12 galaxies of different levels of activity: normal galaxies, starburst galaxies, LINERs, Seyfert 2 and Seyfert 1 galaxies. Quantif...
متن کاملEMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
