چکیده

This paper studies the electrical properties of open-celled aluminium foams manufactured by a novel sintering-dissolution process (SDP) using non-destructive eddy current testing. Experimental measurement results are first presented by means of an impedance analyser under swept frequency testing for the determination of electrical conductivity of Al foams. A double air-cored solenoidal sensor has been constructed for the purpose of evaluating cylindrically shaped samples used in the investigations. The effects of porosity (relative density) and pore size, which are the principle parameters of the foams, on the conductivity are examined. The results demonstrate that the electrical conductivity of Al foam is strongly dependent on both porosity and pore size. The sensor geometry is further simulated electromagnetically using finite element methods, by which the mutual impedance between two coils is calculated to solve the forward electromagnetic (EM) induction problem to provide a calibration curve relating the mutual impedance change with the electrical conductivity of the sample. The results obtained from experimental measurements are found to be in good quantitative agreement with the finite element simulations. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

QUALITY CONTROL OF PRECIPITATION HARDENED ALUMINIUM ALLOY PARTS VIA EDDY-CURRENT NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION

Precipitation hardening is the most common method in the strengthening of aluminium alloys. This method relies on the decrease of solid solubility with temperature reduction to produce fine precipitations which impede the movement of dislocations. The quality control of aluminium alloy specimens is an important concern of engineers. Among different methods, non-destructive techniques are the...

Employing dual frequency phase sensitive demodulation technique to improve the accuracy of voltage measurement in magnetic induction tomography and designing a labratoary prototype

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a promising modality for noninvasive imaging due to its contactless technology. Being a non-contact safe imaging technique, MIT has been an appropriate method in compare to other electrical tomography. In this imaging method, a primary magnetic field is applied by excitation coils to induce eddy currents in the material to be studied and a secondary magnet...

Thermal and electrical conductivity of Aluminium Nitride nanofluids

This study was designed to experimentally measure the thermal and electrical conductivities of Aluminium Nitride/Ethylene Glycol (AlN/EG) nanofluids. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the shape of AlN nanoparticles. Nanofluids with different particle volume concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% were utilized. The thermal and electrical conductivities of the...

Simulation Study for the Non-contact Measurement of the Impedance of Biological Tissue Using an Axial Gradiometer

The measurement of the impedance of biological tissue can be a non-invasive method to find new data of diagnostic relevance. A system for a noncontact measurement of the electrical impedance of biological tissue is presented. The system consists of an excitation coil and two sensing coils coupled together as a gradiometer. The excitation coil is driven by an alternating current. Due to this alt...
