چکیده

Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) techniques potentially allow the absolute, non-invasive quantification of brain perfusion. This can be achieved either by fitting a kinetic model to the data acquired at a number of inversion times (TI) or by applying the model to a single TI assuming values for all other parameters. The accuracy of the model estimation strongly depends on the distribution of the TI sampling points. Here, we propose a Bayesian framework for ASL estimation based on the maximum a posteriori criterion, whereby the optimal sampling points can be determined taking into account the parameter uncertainty.

Measurement of brain perfusion in newborns: Pulsed arterial spin labeling (PASL) versus pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL)

BACKGROUND Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be useful for identifying asphyxiated newborns at risk of developing brain injury, whether or not therapeutic hypothermia was administered. However, this technique has been only rarely used in newborns until now, because of the challenges to obtain sufficient signal-to-...

Reducing Contamination in PASL using BASSI RF pulses

Introduction Arterial spin labeling is sensitive to contamination due to off-resonance effects of the RF label. While it has been argued that in PASL these effects are small compared to pulse profile effects [1], this assessment has to be re-evaluated in view of the advent of highly selective gradient-modulated adiabatic pulses such as FOCI [2], requiring several times more RF energy than the c...

Combined measurement of perfusion, venous oxygen saturation, and skeletal muscle T2* during reactive hyperemia in the leg

BACKGROUND The function of the peripheral microvascular may be interrogated by measuring perfusion, tissue oxygen concentration, or venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) recovery dynamics following induced ischemia. The purpose of this work is to develop and evaluate a magnetic resonance (MR) technique for simultaneous measurement of perfusion, SvO2, and skeletal muscle T2*. METHODS Perfusion, Intr...

1 Test - Retest Reproducibility of perfusion measurements using PASL at 3 T

Introduction: Pulsed arterial spin labeling (PASL) perfusion imaging of cerebral blood flow (CBF) has already proven to be an useful instrument in studying brain pathologies [1,2]. However, validated quantitative imaging methods are not yet provided by the manufacturers. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the reproducibility of a PASL imaging sequence based on the previo...

Comparison of quantitative perfusion imaging using arterial spin labeling at 1.5 and 4.0 Tesla.

High-field arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion MRI is appealing because it provides not only increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but also advantages in terms of labeling due to the increased relaxation time T(1) of labeled blood. In the present study, we provide a theoretical framework for the dependence of the ASL signal on the static field strength, followed by experimental validation i...
