Light propagation through a coiled optical fiber and Pancharatnam phase
نویسنده
چکیده
The nature of changes in the interference pattern caused by the presence of polarization-changing elements in one or both beams of an interferometer, in particular those caused by an effective optical activity due to passage of a polarized beam through a coiled optical fiber are clarified. It is pointed out that for an incident state that is not circularly polarized so that the two interfering beams go to different polarization states, there is an observable nonzero Pancharatnam phase shift between them which depends on the incident polarization state and on the solid angle subtended by the track of the ~k-vector at the centre of the sphere of ~k-vectors. The behaviour of this phase shift is singular when the two interfering states are nearly orthogonal. It is shown that for zero path difference between the two beams, the amplitude of intensity modulation as a function of optical activity is independent of the incident polarization state. c © 2008 Optical Society of America

The adiabatic phase and Pancharatnam ' s phase for polarized light
In 1955 Pancharatnam showed that a cyclic change in the state of polarization of light is accompanied by a phase shift determined by the geometry of the cycle as represented on the Poincare sphere. The phase owes its existence to the non-transitivity of Pancharatnam's connection between different states of polarization. Using the algebra of spinors and 2 x 2 Hermitian matrices, the precise rela...

We investigate the medium effect of a parity-time (PT)-symmetric bilayer on the quantum optical properties of an incident squeezed light at zero temperature (T=0 K). To do so, we use the canonical quantization approach and describe the amplification and dissipation properties of the constituent layers of the bilayer structure by Lorentz model to analyze the quadrature squeezing of the outgoing ...

Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

Many applications rely on the ultra-precise timing of optical signals through fiber, such as fiber interferometers, large telescope arrays, in phase arrayed antennae, optical metrology, and precision navigation and tracking. Environmental changes, specifically those caused by temperature fluctuations, lead to variations in the propagation delay of optical signals and thereby decrease the accura...
متن کاملStudy of Electro-optic and Electrostrictive Effects on Polarization in Single Mode Fiber
If the rotational symmetry of single mode (S.M.) fiber is disturbed, either during manufacturing or through some external perturbation the polarization modes have different propagation constant. Due to this generated birefringence, the linear polarized light through S.M. fiber is distributed in two orthogonal eigenmodes. As a result, the state of polarization (SOP) is changed at the exit end of...
