چکیده

In this paper, we present a limiting distribution theory for the break point estimator in a linear regression model with multiple structural breaks obtained by minimizing a Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) objective function. Our analysis covers both the case in which the reduced form for the endogenous regressors is stable and the case in which it is unstable with multiple structural breaks. For stable reduced forms, we present a limiting distribution theory under two different scenarios: in the case where the parameter change is of fixed magnitude, it is shown that the resulting distribution depends on the distribution of the data and is not of much practical use for inference; in the case where the magnitude of the parameter change shrinks with the sample size, it is shown that the resulting distribution can be used to construct approximate large sample confidence intervals for the break points. For unstable reduced forms, we consider the case where the magnitudes of the parameter changes in both the equation of interest and the reduced forms shrink with the sample size at potentially different rates and not necessarily the same locations in the sample. The resulting limiting distribution theory can be used to construct approximate large sample confidence intervals for the break points. Its usefulness is illustrated via an application to the New Keynesian Phillips curve. JEL classification: C12, C13

Inference Regarding Multiple Structural Changes in Linear Models Estimated via Two Stage Least Squares

In this paper, we extend Bai and Perron’s (1998, Econometrica, p.47-78) framework for multiple break testing to linear models estimated via Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS). Within our framework, the break points are estimated simultaneously with the regression parameters via minimization of the residual sum of squares on the second step of the 2SLS estimation. We establish the consistency of the...

Estimation in ARMA models based on signed ranks

In this paper we develop an asymptotic theory for estimation based on signed ranks in the ARMA model when the innovation density is symmetrical. We provide two classes of estimators and we establish their asymptotic normality with the help of the asymptotic properties for serial signed rank statistics. Finally, we compare our procedure to the one of least-squares, and we illustrate the performa...

Inference regarding multiple structural changes in linear models with endogenous regressors☆

This paper considers the linear model with endogenous regressors and multiple changes in the parameters at unknown times. It is shown that minimization of a Generalized Method of Moments criterion yields inconsistent estimators of the break fractions, but minimization of the Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) criterion yields consistent estimators of these parameters. We develop a methodology for e...

IV estimation with valid and invalid instruments

While 2SLS is the most widely used estimator for simuhaneous equation models, OLS may do better in finite samples. Here we demonstrate analytically that the for the widely used simultaneous equation model with one jointly endogenous variable and valid instruments, 2SLS has smaller MSE error, up to second order, than OLS unless the R , or the F statistic of the reduced form equation is extremely...

Two Stage Least Squares Estimation of Spatial Autoregressive Models with Endogenous Regressors and Many Instruments

This paper considers the IV estimation of spatial autoregressive models with endogenous regressors in the presence of many instruments. To improve asymptotic e¢ ciency, it may be desirable to use many valid instruments. However, …nite sample properties of IV estimators can be sensitive to the number of instruments. For a spatial model with endogenous regressors, this paper derives the asymptoti...
