SolEx: A model for mixed COHSCl-volatile solubilities and exsolved gas compositions in basalt

چکیده
We present a software application, SolEx, to calculate basaltic melt and coexisting vapour compositions in the system C–O–H–S–Cl. Such a model has great utility in interpreting emitted gas and melt inclusion compositions, especially through the incorporation of sulphur and chlorine, the most commonly measured volcanic gas species. We assume that the behaviour of the fluid phase is controlled by the volumetrically dominant volatile species, H2O and CO2, whereas sulphur and chlorine partition between the melt and fluid phases. Melt–fluid partition coefficients for S and Cl were parameterised from measurements by Lesne et al. (2011a, p. 1737). The model of Churakov and Gottschalk (2003a, p. 2415) was applied to calculate fugacity coefficients and the equilibrium constants for the reaction imelt-ifluid were thereby deduced. SO2 dominates at oxidation states of DNNO40:5 (Jugo et al., 2010, p. 5926), where this model is applicable. In the forward model, total volatile inventories and melt composition are specified by the user. The parameterisation of Dixon (1997, p. 368) is used to predict the partitioning of CO2 and H2O between vapour and melt phases. An iterative procedure is employed to predict the partitioning of S and Cl components between fluid and melt phases. Melt and gas compositions and gas volume fraction are thereby modelled over pressures in the range 5–4000 bar. This approach satisfactorily reproduces independent literature data on S and Cl behaviour in basalt. SolEx is a user-friendly software package available for OS X and Windows, facilitating modelling of closedand open-system C–O–H–S–Cl degassing in basalts. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Experimental Simulation of Closed-System Degassing in the System Basalt^H2O^CO2^S^Cl
Magma degassing processes are commonly elucidated by studies of melt inclusions in erupted phenocrysts and measurements of gas discharge at volcanic vents, allied to experimentally constrained models of volatile solubility. Here we develop an alternative experimental approach aimed at directly simulating decompression-driven, closed-system degassing of basaltic magma in equilibrium with an H^C^...
متن کاملCOMPARING THE EFFECTS OF H2O, F, AND Cl ON NEAR-LIQUIDUS PHASE EQUILIBRIA OF A MODEL HIGH-Fe BASALT: IMPLICATIONS FOR VOLATILE INDUCED MANTLE
Introduction: Volatile species, such as H2O, CO2, F, and Cl, are important in the generation and differentiation of basaltic melts. On the Earth, dissolved H2O (or in certain circumstances CO2) is thought to be the dominant volatile in most basaltic magmas. Therefore, significant effort has been placed on understanding how water and CO2 affect basalt genesis and crystallization of terrestrial m...
متن کامل"Very High Alumina Basalt":
The proposal by Hubbard et al. (1) that "Very High Alumina basalt" ("VHA basalt") may represent an important primary lunar magma type neglects consideration of certain well-characterized high-magnesium highland rocks, among them spinel troctolite from Luna 20 (2) and Apollo 16 samples (3) and dunite from Apollo 17 samples (4), and the possibility that "VHA basalt" may in fact have originated by...
متن کاملDetermination of Original Gas Condensate Composition in The Case of Gas Coning
Obtaining samples that represent original fluid of reservoirs optimizes reservoirs management. The optimized management increases recovery. Also, selecting and performing proper Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) or Enhance Oil Recovery (EOR) programs depend on collecting representative samples. Achieving accurate compositions of original in-situ fluid prevents overdesigning surface facilities. Re...
متن کاملA new lunar high-Ti basalt type defined from clasts in Apollo 16 breccia 60639
This paper reports the detailed examination of three basalt clasts from Apollo 16 breccia 60639 that represent a new variant of high-Ti basalt returned from the Moon by the Apollo 16 mission. Mineral chemistry and whole-rock analyses were conducted on aliquots from three clasts (breccia matrix, basalt, and basalt + breccia matrix). The basalt clasts, which are not overtly porphyritic, contain c...
