چکیده

The HI distribution at the epoch of reionization (EOR) is largely determined by the sizes and distribution of the ionized regions. In the scenario where the ionized regions have comoving sizes of the order of a few Mpc, the large scale statistical properties of the HI distribution are dominated by the Poisson noise of the discrete ionized regions, and it is highly non-Gaussian. We investigate the possibility of probing reionization by studying these non-Gaussian features using future radio interferometric observations of redshifted 21 cm HI radiation. We develop a formalism relating correlations between the visibilities measured at three different baselines and frequencies to the bispectrum of HI fluctuations. For visibilities at the same frequency, this signal is found to be of the same order as the two visibility correlation which probes the HI power spectrum. For visibilities at different frequencies, we find that the correlations decay within a frequency difference of ∼ 1MHz. This implies that it is, in principle, straightforward to extract this HI signal from various contaminants which are believed to have a continuum spectra and are expected to be correlated even at large frequency separations.

Statistical features of 21-cm emission from the epoch between reionization and Gunn-Peterson transparency

We investigate the 21-cm emission from the epoch between reionization zr and Gunn-Peterson transparency zgp. According to the lognormal model of the thermal history around reionization, hydrogen clouds in zr > z > zgp are hot, and a predominant part of baryonic gas is ionized, but still opaque to Lyα photons. Therefore, 21-cm emission is a distinctive characteristic of this epoch. We show that ...

Probing the Dark Ages with the Square Kilometer Array

The epoch of reionization (EoR) sets a fundamental benchmark in cosmic structure formation, corresponding to the formation of the first luminous objects that act to ionize the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Recent observations at near-IR and radio wavelengths imply that we are finally probing into this key epoch of galaxy formation at z ≥ 6. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will provide cr...

Can Non-Gaussian Cosmological Models Explain the WMAP’s High Optical Depth for Reionization?

The first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data suggest a high optical depth for Thomson scattering of 0.17 ± 0.04, implying that the universe was reionized at an early epoch, z ∼ 20. Such early reionization is likely to be caused by UV photons from first stars, but it appears that the observed high optical depth can be reconciled within the standard structure formation model only if s...

Probing the dark ages with redshift distribution of GRBs

In this article, we explore the possibility of using the properties of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) to probe the physical conditions in the epochs prior to reionization. The redshift distribution of GRBs is modelled using the Press-Schechter formalism with an assumption that they follow the cosmic star formation history. We reproduce the observed star formation rate obtained from galaxies in the red...
