چکیده

Differentiated Services (DS) is currently the major approach discussed to provide network layer service differentiation in IP networks. However, the discussion mainly addresses fixed networks. This short paper analyzes the usage of DS in cellular wireless packet networks being based on the ‘Universal Mobile Telecommunications System’ (UMTS), focusing on service provisioning within the transport IP network of UMTS.

An Architecture for Integrating UMTS and 802.11 WLAN Networks

Cellular networks, e.g. UMTS, provide voice and data services to mobile users. In hot spots where users need high speed data services operators can deploy low-cost high-speed WLANs, e.g. 802.11, to cover hot-spots. This paper proposes a possible architecture of integrating UMTS and 802.11 WLAN. The architecture allows a mobile node to maintain data (PS) connection through WLAN and voice (CS) co...

A Framework for QoS Support in the UMTS/GPRS Backbone Network Using DiffServ

A distinguishing feature of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is the support of different levels of quality of service (QoS) as required by subscribers and their applications. To provide QoS, the UMTS backbone network needs an efficient QoS mechanism to provide the demanded level of services on a UMTS core network. This paper presents a methodology of provisioning QoS in thi...

Extending GTP Protocol to Support Seamless Handover between UMTS and WLAN Access Network

Much of interest has been involved in integrating UMTS and WLAN networks in order to take full advantage of the two. In such an integrated network, UMTS subscribers can access to UMTS services through 3G or WLAN access networks. This is highly desirable because network operators will use WLAN hotspots to increase network coverage, while offering subscribers with high-speed connections to 3G net...

Convergence of UMTS and Internet Services for End-to-end Quality of Service Support

Internet evolution delineated through the last years has urged the wireless network community to adopt the support of the IP protocol. The deployment of IP multimedia services with guaranteed quality of service in both the access and core network is one of the primary requirements for 3G wireless networks. This paper focuses on issues regarding interoperability with external, “wired” QoS-enable...
