Bend and Twist Interactions in Practice

چکیده

The interaction models that are currently dominant in smartphones neglect the capabilities that human hands have to extract information and manipulate objects dexterously. In response to this, tangible, organic and deformable UIs have been proposed. Research is showing that interacting by deforming a UI offers a great amount of control over continuous parameters, and an excellent user experience (UX). In a series of studies conducted with deformable devices that can be bent and twisted, we have learnt what the physical properties of the deformable device should be like. In addition, we now understand better how the type of deformation gesture and the extent of the deformation affect performance and UX. When reviewing these studies, we find that these design techniques offer a great deal of tolerance towards achieving satisfactory, even delightful, interactive experiences even when deviating from the ideal properties and conditions, possibly due to the high degree of adaptability of the human somatosensory system to interact with a rich physical environment.

Effect of polar intermolecular interactions on the elastic constants of bent-core nematics and the origin of the twist-bend phase.

A molecular theory of both elastic constants and the flexoelectric coefficients of bent-core nematic liquid crystals has been developed taking into account dipole-dipole interactions as well as polar interactions determined by the bent molecular shape. It has been shown that if polar interactions are neglected, the elastic constants are increasing monotonically with the decreasing temperature. ...

What happens when tendons bend and twist? Proteoglycans.

When tendons must bend or twist in order to fulfil their function of attaching muscle to bone they are subjected to forces that could damage the tendon. However, there are concomitant protective changes in the structure of the tendon at the location of bending. One of these changes involves increased synthesis and accumulation of the large proteoglycan aggrecan. The accumulation of aggrecan can...

Unique Nanoscale Behavior in the Twist-bend Liquid Crystal Phase of a Flexible Linear Trimer

We synthesized a liquid crystal dimer and trimer, which exhibit the twist-bend liquid crystal phase, and characterized their microscopic and nanoscopic properties to identify distinctions in the nature of their respective twist-bend phases. On the microscopic scale, the twist-bend phases formed of each oligomer appear essentially identical. However, while the liquid crystal dimer exhibits a tem...

Twirling and whirling: viscous dynamics of rotating elastic filaments.

Motivated by diverse phenomena in cellular biophysics, including bacterial flagellar motion and DNA transcription and replication, we study the overdamped nonlinear dynamics of a rotationally forced filament with twist and bend elasticity. Competition between twist injection, twist diffusion, and writhing instabilities is described by coupled PDEs for twist and bend evolution. Analytical and nu...

Equilibrium shapes of a twist-bend nematic drop

These notes supplement our paper Interfacial and morphological features of a twist-bend nematic drop, producing a number of analytical details of the mathematical model employed there to interpret the experimental observations of equilibrium shapes of a twist-bend nematic drop in two space dimensions. For the sake of continuity and completeness, some figures and equations are also reproduced here.

The dependency of twist-bend nematic liquid crystals on molecular structure: a progression from dimers to trimers, oligomers and polymers.

This article gives an overview on recent developments concerning the twist-bend nematic phase. The twist-bend nematic phase has been discussed as the missing link between the uniaxial nematic mesophase (N) and the helical chiral nematic phase (N*). After an introduction discussing the key physical properties of the NTB phase and the methods used to identify the twist-bend nematic mesophase this...
