Fracture Toughness Anomalies: Viewpoint of Topological Constraint Theory

چکیده
The relationship between composition, structure, and resistance to fracture remains poorly understood. Here, based on molecular dynamics simulations, we report that 1 sodium silicate glasses (NS) and calcium–silicate–hydrates (CSH) feature an anomalous maximum in fracture toughness. In the framework of topological constraint theory, this anomaly is correlated to a flexible-to-rigid transition, driven by pressure or composition for NS and CSH, respectively. This topological transition, observed for an isostatic network, is also shown to correspond to a ductile-to-brittle transition. At this state, the network is rigid but free of eigen-stress and features stress relaxation through crack blunting, resulting in optimal resistance to fracture. Our topological approach could therefore enable the computational design of tough inorganic solids, which has long been a "holy grail" within the non-metallic materials chemistry community.

Variation of fracture toughness with constraint
‘Curving’ could occur in Mode I brittle fracture and it can be attributed to the constraint. The variation of the apparent fracture toughness with constraint with or without crack curving is investigated. Using a critical opening or hoop stress as the fracture criterion, it is demonstrated that a fracture event can be quantified by two mechanics parameters, i.e. K and A3 for fracture without cu...
متن کاملOn the fracture toughness of ferroelectric ceramics with electric field applied parallel to the crack front
Mode I steady crack growth is analyzed to determine the toughening due to domain switching in ferroelectric ceramics with electric field applied parallel to the crack front. A multi-axial, electromechanically coupled, incremental constitutive theory is applied to model the material behavior of the ferroelectric ceramic. The constitutive law is then implemented within the finite element method t...

* Corresponding author; Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Crack tunneling is a crack growth feature often seen in stable tearing crack growth tests on specimens made of ductile materials and containing through-thickness cracks with initially straight crack fronts. As a specimen is loaded monotonically, the mid-section of the crack front will advance first, which will be followed by crack growth ...
متن کاملEffect of Residual Stress on Brittle Fracture Testing
Residual stress present in coupons used for fracture testing will influence the experimental determination of fracture toughness. Triaxial residual stress (e.g., due to welding) can alter both the driving force for fracture and the crack-tip constraint at a specified load, so that the apparent toughness of a coupon depends on the residual stress present. In this paper, we employ a micromechanic...
متن کاملThe Effect of Microstructure on Estimation of the Fracture Toughness (KIC) Rotor Steel Using Charpy Absorbed Energy (CVN)
The proportional relationships between the Charpy absorbed energy (CVN) and the KIC values have been established for a wide variety of steels. Several formulae have been proposed that predict KIC from CVN. The purpose of this study is to investigate, by means of compact testing fracture toughness specimens, the effective role of microstructure for estimation of the fractur...
