The Effects of a Robot's Nonverbal Behavior on Users' Mimicry and Evaluation

چکیده
In an attempt to replicate earlier research on intelligent agents for robots, we analysed the effects of the presence and absence of a robot ́s nonverbal behavior on users ́ nonverbal behavior and evaluation with a between subjects experimental study (N = 90). Results demonstrated that when the robot shows nonverbal behavior (head movement and deictic, illustrative and rhythmic gesture) participants evaluated it more positively. Against expectations, however, participants displayed more nonverbal behavior when the robot only used speech.

The Effects of an Embodied Conversational Agent's Nonverbal Behavior on User's Evaluation and Behavioral Mimicry
Against the background that recent studies on embodied conversational agents demonstrate the importance of their behavior, an experimental study is presented that assessed the effects of different nonverbal behaviors of an embodied conversational agent on the users ́ experiences and evaluations as well as on their behavior. 50 participants conducted a conversation with different versions of the ...
متن کاملKnow Your Users! Empirical Results for Tailoring an Agent's Nonverbal Behavior to Different User Groups
Since embodied agents are considered as equally usable by all kinds of users, not much attention has been paid to the influence of users ́ attributes on the evaluation of agents in general and their (nonverbal) behaviour in particular. Here, we present evidence from three empirical studies with the agent Max, which focus on the effects of participants` gender, age and computer literacy. The resu...
متن کاملThe Effects of Incidental Similarity with a Stranger on Mimicry Behavior
Aims: For social psychologists, mimicry could serve a function of “social glue”, binding people together and creating harmonious relationships. Design: In three experiments, we used the paradigm of incidental similarity in order to enhance the desire to create affiliation and rapport between a participant and a stranger, and to evaluate its effect on mimicry behavior. Findings: Undergraduates w...

Conversations are characterized by an interactional synchrony between verbal and nonverbal behaviors [Kendon, A. (1970). Movement coordination in social interaction: some examples described. Acta Psychologica, 32(2), 101–125]. A subset of these contingent conversational behaviors is direct mimicry. During face to face interaction, people who mimic the verbal [Giles, H., Coupland, J., & Coupland...
متن کاملCo-Speech Gesture Mimicry in the Process of Collaborative Referring During Face-to-Face Dialogue
Mimicry has been observed regarding a range of nonverbal behaviors, but only recently have researchers started to investigate mimicry in co-speech gestures. These gestures are considered to be crucially different from other aspects of nonverbal behavior due to their tight link with speech. This study provides evidence of mimicry in co-speech gestures in face-to-face dialogue, the most common fo...
