Commodity and equity markets: Some stylized facts from a copula approach

چکیده
In this paper, we propose to identify the dependence structure that exists between returns on equity and commodity futures and its development over the past 20 years. The key point is that we do not impose any dependence structure, but let the data select it. To do so, we model the dependence between commodity (metal, agriculture and energy) and stock markets using a flexible approach that allows us to investigate whether the co-movement is: (i) symmetrical and frequent, (ii) (a) symmetrical and mostly present during extreme events and (iii) asymmetrical and mostly present during extreme events. We also allow for this dependence to be time-varying from January 1990 to February 2012. Our analysis uncovers three major stylised facts. First, we find that the dependence between commodity and stock markets is time-varying, symmetrical and occurs most of the time (as opposed to mostly during extreme events). Second, not allowing for time-varying parameters in the dependence distribution generates a bias towards an evidence of tail dependence. Similarly, considering only tail dependence may lead to false evidence of asymmetry. Third, a growing co-movement between industrial metals and equity markets is identified as early as 2003; this co-movement spreads to all commodity classes and becomes unambiguously stronger with the global financial crisis after Fall 2008. 2013 Elsevier B.V. Stock (Mis) Pricing and Diversification in Africa: Evidence from Selected African Exchanges
T his paper ascertains the extent of mispricing in equity portfolios, mispricing-divestment relation, and the role of African equities as risk diversification strategies during commodity market turbulence. Following Baur and Lucey (2010), one identifies an arbitrary commodity market crisis to be 1%, 5%, and 10% declining moments in returns. However, their approach is extended by usin...
متن کاملThe Determinants of Dynamic Dependence: An Analysis of Commodity Futures and Equity Markets
This paper investigates the determinants of the dynamic equity-commodity return correlations between five commodity futures sub-sectors (i.e. energy, foods and fibers, grains and oilseeds, livestock, and precious metals) and two equity market indices (i.e. S&P 500 and Russell 3000). We employ the DCC model, as well as three time-varying copulas: (i) the normal copula, (ii) the student’s t copul...
متن کاملFinancial System Performance and Inflation in Iran: Some Stylized Facts
The mutual relationship between financial development, as a multilateral concept, and inflation, as a key indicator of macro-economy is crucial. In this paper, inflation regimes are identified using Markov-Switching approach, and then the finance-inflation mutual relationship is investigated in post-revolution cabinets in Iran (1982-2017). Our findings suggest that there are mutual co-movements...
متن کاملInternational Equity Flows and Returns: A Quantitative Equilibrium Approach
The authors model trading by foreign and domestic investors in developed-country equity markets. The key assumptions are that (i) both the foreign and domestic investor populations contain investors of different sophistication, and (ii) investor sophistication matters for performance in both public equity and private off-market investments. A quantitative model with these assumptions delivers a...
