Reciprocity in Gift-Exchange-Games

چکیده
This paper presents an analysis of data from a gift-exchange-game experiment. The experiment was described in ‘The Impact of Social Comparisons on Reciprocity’ by Gächter et al. 2012. Since this paper uses state-of-art data science techniques, the results provide a different point of view on the problem. As already shown in relevant literature from experimental economics, human decisions deviate from rational payoff maximization. The average gift rate was 31%. Gift rate was under no conditions zero. Further, we derive some special findings and calculate their significance.

Explaining gift exchange – The limits of good intentions
This paper explores the limitations of intention-based social preferences as an explanation of gift-exchange between a firm and a worker. In a framework with one self-interested and one reciprocal player, gift-giving never arises in equilibrium. Instead, any equilibrium in a large class of multistage games must involve mutually unkind behavior of both players. Besides gift-exchange, this class ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Social Comparisons on Reciprocity
In this paper, we investigate how social comparison information about referent others (i.e., learning what similar others do, and how they are treated) affects reciprocal relationships. Using three-person gift-exchange games, we study how employees’ reciprocity towards an employer is affected by pay comparison information (what co-workers earn) and effort comparison information (how co-workers ...
متن کاملERC A Theory of Equity, Reciprocity and Competition
We demonstrate that a simple model, constructed on the premise that people are motivated by both their pecuniary payoff and their relative payoff standing, explains behavior in a wide variety of laboratory games. Included are games where equity is thought to be a factor, such as ultimatum, two-period alternating offer, and dictator games; games where reciprocity is thought to play a role, such ...
متن کاملGift exchange and the separation of ownership and control
Numerous gift exchange experiments have found a positive relationship between employers’ wage offers and workers’ effort levels. In (almost) all these experiments the employer both owns and controls the firm. Yet in reality many firms are characterized by the separation of ownership and control. In this paper we explore to what extent this affects the wage-effort relationship observed. We compa...

Theories of altruism are applied to explain contributions to charities and intergenerational transfers and bequests. Theories of reciprocity have been inv...
