چکیده

Over the last 30 years or so many results have appeared on the descriptional complexity of machines with limited resources. Since these results have appeared in a variety of different contexts, our goal here is to provide a survey of these results. Particular emphasis is put on limiting resources (e.g., nondeterminism, ambiguity, lookahead, etc.) for various types of finite state machines, pushdown automata, parsers and cellular automata and on the effect it has on their descriptional complexity. We also address the question of how descriptional complexity might help in the future to solve practical issues, such as software reliability.

Formal semantics of language and the Richard-Berry paradox

The classical logical antinomy known as Richard-Berry paradox is combined with plausible assumptions about the size i.e. the descriptional complexity, of Turing machines formalizing certain sentences, to show that formalization of language leads to contradiction.

On the Descriptional Complexity of Limited Propagating Lindenmayer Systems

We investigate the descriptional complexity of limited propagating Lindenmayer systems and their deterministic and tabled variants with respect to the number of rules and the number of symbols. We determine the decrease of complexity when the generative capacity is increased. For incomparable families, we give languages that can be described more efficiently in either of these families than in ...

Beyond the Turing Test ( Extended , original internal report )

We define the main factor of intelligence as the ability to comprehend, formalising this ability with the help of new constructs based on descriptional complexity. The result is a comprehension test, or C-test, exclusively defined in terms of universal descriptional machines (e.g universal Turing machines). Despite the absolute and non-anthropomorphic character of the test it is equally applica...

The Formal Language Theory Column

Formal languages can be described by several means. A basic question is how succinctly can a descriptional system represent a formal language in comparison with other descriptional systems? What is the maximal size trade-off when changing from one system to another, and can it be achieved? Here, we select some recent trends in the descriptional complexity of formal languages and discuss the pro...

Descriptional Complexity of Generalized Forbidding Grammars

This paper discusses the descriptional complexity of generalized forbidding grammars in context of degrees, numbers of nonterminals and conditional productions, and a new descriptional complexity measure—an index—of generalized forbidding grammars.
