چکیده

-A mixed-layer kaolinite/smectite (K/S) containing trace amounts of quartz, discrete kaolinite, goethite-hematite, and calcite was hydrothermally reacted with deionized water at 150", 200", and 250"C for 1 to 12 months. The starting K/S contained 50% smectite consisting of 15~ low-charge and 350 high-charge layers. The X-ray powder diffraction and chemical analyses of the reacted products indicated a progressive reaction from high-charge to low-charge smectite as a function of time and temperature. The reaction reached completion after 4 months at 250"C, at which point high-charge smectite layers entirely reacted to low-charge smectite layers, the latter maintaining a constant proportion of about 90% for longer run durations. For long reaction times, discrete kaolinite totally reacted, whereas quartz showed only partial dissolution and iron oxides remained stable. Thus, the reaction of high-charge to low-charge smectite layers may be expressed as: high-charge smectite + kaolinite (both interstratified and discrete component) + quartz ~ low-charge smectite. Key Words--Cation-exchange capacity, Hydrothermal transformation, Kaolinite/smectite, Layer charge, Smectite, X-ray powder diffraction.

Interstratifi ed kaolinite-smectite: Nature of the layers and mechanism of smectite kaolinization

This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the nature and evolution mechanism of interstratifi ed clay minerals. We examined the <2 μm or <0.2 μm size fraction of interstratifi ed kaolinite-smectite (K-S) formed by hydrothermal and hydrogenic alteration of volcanogenic material from a Tortonian clay deposit (Almería, Spain), a weathered Eocene volcanic ash (Yucatan, Mexico), and...

Hydrothermal sediment alteration at a seafloor vent field: Grimsey Graben, Tjörnes Fracture Zone, north of Iceland

[1] An active seafloor hydrothermal system subjects the background sediments of the Grimsey Graben (Tjörnes Fracture Zone) to alteration that produces dissolution of the primary volcaniclastic matrix and replacement/precipitation of sulfides, sulfates, oxides, oxyhydroxides, carbonates and phyllosilicates. Three types of hydrothermal alteration of the sediment are defined on the basis of the do...

Reaction Pathways of Clay Minerals in Tropical Soils: Insights from Kaolinite-smectite Synthesis Experiments

Pedogenic smectite from a young (Holocene) tropical soil was reacted in Al-rich solution at 150oC for a range of reaction times (3 to 120 days) in order to study mechanisms and rates associated with the transformation of smectite to kaolinite via interstratified kaolinite-smectite (K-S). As has been observed in tropical soils, the overall reaction rate is logarithmic, with rapid initial transfo...

Chemiographic Analysis of Trioctahedral Smectite-to-chlorite Conversion Series from the O H Y U Caldera, Japan

-The chemical compositions ofchlorite-smectite mixed-layered minerals (C/S) from the Ohyu caldera (lnoue, 1985) are analyzed using M+-4Si-3R 2§ diagrams. The assumed original saponite has the following composition: Si3.54Alo.460 ~ 0Alo. ~7~Fe 2§ ~.385Mg1.z95Mn0.o2(OH)2M+o.56. Random C/S minerals ( 100 to 80% expandable layers) are interpreted as an interstratification of the starting 2:1 smecti...

Compositional Variation in Component Layers in Natural Illite/smectite

-Published chemical data for suites of mixed-layer minerals from diagenetic sedimentary rocks, hydrothermally altered tufts, and a metasomatic bentonite bed indicate that the layer charge and composition of the different components of illite/smectite (I/S) differ from one geological environment to another. It appears that the composition of the elemental smectite and illite layers in the I/S is...
