Air-sea interaction over the Atlantic warm pool in the NCEP CFS

چکیده
[1] This study shows that the SST variations in the July– August–September (JAS) peak season of the Atlantic Warm Pool (AWP) are modulated by the air-sea fluxes. This feature is captured in the correlations between the rainfall and SST, and rainfall and SST tendency in the multi-decadal integration of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System (CFS). Likewise, similar correlations are obtained from the NCEP CFS integration when latent heat flux is correlated with SST and SST tendency. However, when the same Atmospheric General Circulation Model as in the NCEP CFS (also called Global Forecast System [GFS]) is forced with observed SST, then the influence of air-sea fluxes on SST is lost. Further analysis of observed air-sea fluxes over the AWP region indicates that surface evaporation is weakly influenced by surface winds and air-sea humidity variations. But in the NCEP CFS and more so in the NCEP GFS, the latent heat flux, contrary to observations, is strongly modulated by the air-sea humidity variations. Citation: Misra, V., S. Chan, R. Wu, and E. The influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran
The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...

Variability of the tropical Western Hemisphere warm pool (WHWP) of water warmer than 28.58C, which extends seasonally over parts of the eastern North Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the western tropical North Atlantic (TNA), was previously studied by Wang and Enfield using the da Silva data from 1945–93. Using additional datasets of the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis field and the NCEP SS...
متن کاملInfluences of the Atlantic Warm Pool on Western Hemisphere Summer Rainfall and Atlantic Hurricanes
The Atlantic warm pool (AWP) of water warmer than 28.5°C comprises the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the western tropical North Atlantic (TNA). The AWP reaches its maximum size around September, with large AWPs being almost 3 times larger than small ones. Although ENSO teleconnections are influential on the AWP, about two-thirds of the large and small AWP variability appears unrelated ...

The seasonal prediction skill of the Asian summer monsoon is assessed using retrospective predictions (1982–2009) from the ECMWF System 4 (SYS4) and NCEP CFS version 2 (CFSv2) seasonal prediction systems. In both SYS4 and CFSv2, a cold bias of sea-surface temperature (SST) is found over the equatorial Pacific, North Atlantic, Indian Oceans and over a broad region in the Southern Hemisphere rela...
