چکیده

Two new techniques for investigating the thermal skinburn potential of airbags are presented. A reduced-volume airbag test procedure has been developed to obtain airbag pressures that are representative of a dynamic ridedown event during a static deployment. Temperature and heat flux measurements made with this procedure can be used to predict airbag thermal burn potential. Measurements from the reduced-volume procedure are complemented by data obtained using two gas-jet simulators, called heatguns. Gas is vented in controlled bursts from a large, heated, pressurized tank of gas onto a target surface. Heat flux measurements on the target surface have been used to develop quantitative models of the relationships between gas jet characteristics and burn potential.

[Chemical burn from an airbag].

Airbags are a safety mechanism proven to be effective in reducing the severity and fatality of traffic accidents.1 Nevertheless, airbag deployment has induced multiple injuries; superficial abrasions, contusions, lacerations, and thermal and chemical burns are the most common.2-4 A 21-year-old man was seen by the dermatologist on duty for facial burns and eye injury secondary to the sudden depl...

Development of an Improved Airbag-Induced Thermal Skin Burn Model

The UMTRI Airbag Skin Burn Model has been improved through laboratory testing and the implementation of a more flexible heat transfer model. A new impinging jet module based on laboratory measurements of heat flux due to high-velocity gas jets has been added, along with an implicit finite-difference skin conduction module. The new model can be used with airbag gas dynamics simulation outputs, o...

A New Methodology for Investigating Airbag Induced Skin Abrasions

Although airbags have been shown to reduce the incidence of life threatening injuries, they have increased the risk of minor injuries such as those to the skin. Based on the distribution of injuries that can be directly attributed to the airbag itself, it is believed that shear loading exists as a mechanism for these skin injuries. The purpose of this study was to develop a new methodology desi...

Airbag-related chest wall burn as a marker of underlying injury: a case report

INTRODUCTION This case of a man who sustained an airbag-induced thoracic injury and burn, highlights the potential harm that can be caused by airbags. It also serves to illustrate that a surface burn which looks small and benign can actually be a surface marker of a more serious injury. Staff working in emergency departments need to be aware of the risk of possible airbag-associated injuries. ...

A pilot evaluation study of high resolution digital thermal imaging in the assessment of burn depth.

Thermal imaging is a tool that can be used to determine burn depth. We have revisited the use of this technology in the assessment of burns and aim to establish if high resolution, real-time technology can be practically used in conjunction with clinical examination to determine burn depth. 11 patients with burns affecting upper and lower limbs and the anterior and posterior trunk were included...
