Assessing Lean Systems Using Variability Mapping

چکیده

A new approach to assess lean manufacturing based on system’s variability is proposed. The assessment utilizes a new tool called variability source mapping (VSMII) which focuses on capturing and reducing variability across the production system. The new tool offers a new metric called variability index to measure the overall variability level of the system. Based on the mappin g and the new metric, VSMII suggests a variability reduction plan guided by a recommendation list of both lean techniques as well as production control policies. An industrial application is used to demonstrate the new tool. Results show that VSMII managed t o reduce the overall variability level of the system as well as non-value added activities. Finally, the new variability index was successfully applied as a leanness assessment metric. © 2012 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Can a Healthcare “Lean Sweep” Deliver on What Matters to Patients?; Comment on “Improving Wait Times to Care for Individuals with Multimorbidities and Complex Conditions Using Value Stream Mapping”

Disconnects and defects in care – such as duplication, poor integration between services or avoidable adverse events – are costly to the health system and potentially harmful to patients and families. For patients living with multiple chronic conditions, such disconnects can be particularly detrimental. Lean is an approach to optimizing value by reducing waste (eg, duplication and defects) and ...

Study and Implementation of Lean Manufacturing in a Garment Manufacturing Company: Bangladesh Perspective

Lean manufacturing is a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating wastes (non-value added activities) through continuous improvement by conveying the product at the pull of the customer in pursuit of production. In a more basic term, more value with less work. Since lean manufacturing eliminates many of the problems associated with poor production scheduling and line balancing, lean ma...

Implementation of a Lean Model for Carrying out Value Stream Mapping in a Manufacturing Industry

Value Stream Mapping technique involves flowcharting the steps, activities, material flows, communications, and other process elements that are involved with a process or transformation. In this respect, Value stream mapping helps an organization to identify the non-value-adding elements in a targeted process and brings a product or a group of products that use the same resources through the ma...

Assessing leanness level with demand dynamics in a multi-stage production system

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a dynamic model to measure the degree of system’s leanness under dynamic demand conditions using a novel integrated metric. Design/methodology/approach – The multi-stage production system model is based on a system dynamics approach. The leanness level is measured using a new developed integrated metric that combines efficiency, WIP performance ...
