Testing Students Understanding of Complex Transfer

چکیده
Courses on Machine Translation MT need to be tailored to di erent sets of students with di ering skills and demands Kenny Way Nevertheless any contemporary course on MT ought to equip students with at least a super cial knowledge of the di erences between rule based and statistical MT direct and indirect approaches and transfer based and interlingual systems With regard to this latter distinction the issue of complex transfer is an integral com ponent to this section of a course on MT whether this be to computational linguists translators or language students This paper presents a method of assessing the level of understanding of the issues pertaining to complex transfer for nal year undergraduates studying a degree pro gramme in Computational Linguistics The intention is that this methodology may contribute to a suite of exercises which may be used by other instructors in Machine Translation

Knowledge Translation in Healthcare – Towards Understanding its True Complexities; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
This commentary argues that to fully appreciate the complexities of knowledge transfer one firstly has to distinguish between the notions of “data, information, knowledge and wisdom,” and that the latter two are highly context sensitive. In particular one has to understand knowledge as being personal rather than objective, and hence there is no form of knowledge that a-priori is more authoritat...
متن کاملStudents' Adaptation and Transfer of Strategies across Levels of Scaffolding in an Exploratory Environment
While the effect of scaffolding on learning has received much attention, less is known about its effect on students’ strategy use, especially in transfer activities. This study focuses on students’ adaptive behaviours as a function of given scaffolding and when transitioning from a scaffolded to an unstructured activity. We study this in the context of a complex physics simulation in which stud...
متن کاملLevel of interactivity and executive functions as predictors of learning in computer-based chemistry simulations
High school students’ learning outcomes was examined comparing exploratory vs. worked simulations. The effects of added icons and students’ executive functions were also examined. In Study 1, urban high school students (N = 84) were randomly assigned to one of four versions of a web-based simulation of kinetic molecular theory that varied in instructional format (exploratory vs. worked simulati...
متن کاملThe Effect of Washback on Reading Comprehension of Medical Students in English for Specific Purposes Classes
Background: Testing and teaching are interrelated in education process; using various kinds of tests, teachers are able to anticipate the strong and weak points of learning in students, their progress and their accomplishment. The influence of test on teaching and learning is commonly referred to as washback. Testing washback is a twisted concept that becomes even more complex under a various i...
متن کاملUnderstanding Complex Systems
Understanding scientific phenomena in terms of complex systems principles is both scientifically and pedagogically important. Situations from different disciplines of science are often governed by the same principle, and so promoting knowledge transfer across disciplines makes valuable cross-fertilization and scientific unification possible. Although evidence for this kind of transfer has been ...
