On Making an Effort

چکیده
This paper is in the main a critical study of Robert Kane’s account of the nature of Free Choice. I begin by briefly describing Kane’s theory. I then consider four questions about a concept that is central to his account—viz., the concept of an Effort of Will. I argue that Kane’s position affords satisfactory answers to three of these questions. Reflection on the fourth and final question, however, reveals a problem for Kanean Libertarianism. The problem, in brief, is this. It can be shown that the plausibility of Kanean Libertarianism is inversely proportional to the plausibility of a certain principle of agency. The latter is at least fairly plausible, so the former is at best fairly implausible. This is a strike against Kanean Libertarianism. I conclude by drawing two general lessons from the preceding discussion.

Evaluation of the effect of orexin-1 receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell on cost-benefit decision making in male rats
Background: Cost-benefit decision-making is a one of the decision-making models in which the animal achieves a final benefit (reward) by evaluating the cost (effort or delay). The role of different brain regions such as nucleus accumbens in this process has been proven. Orexin is a neuropeptide expressed exclusively by lateral hypothalamus area neurons and orexin-producing neurons project their...

متن کاملAn Improved COCOMO based Model to Estimate the Effort of Software Projects
One of important aspects of software projects is estimating the cost and time required to develop projects. Nowadays, this issue has become one of the key concerns of project managers. Accurate estimation of essential effort to produce and develop software is heavily effective on success or failure of software projects and it is highly regarded as a vital factor. Failure to achieve convincing a...

In this paper, we explore the issue of coordination in a manufacturer-retailer supply chain where the manufacturer is socially responsible and invests in CSR activities. On the other hand, the retailer invests in promotional efforts and uses a periodic review order-up-to policy for replenishing items. First, the decentralized decision-making structure is modeled to calculate the minimum accepta...
متن کاملPrefrontostriatal circuitry regulates effort-related decision making.
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), the basolateral amygdala (BLA), and the dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) are part of a neural system that is critically involved in making decisions on how much effort to invest for rewards. In the present study, we sought to identify functional interactions between ACC and NAc regulating effort-based decision making. Rats were tested in a T-maze cost...
متن کاملDopamine and Effort-Based Decision Making
Motivational theories of choice focus on the influence of goal values and strength of reinforcement to explain behavior. By contrast relatively little is known concerning how the cost of an action, such as effort expended, contributes to a decision to act. Effort-based decision making addresses how we make an action choice based on an integration of action and goal values. Here we review behavi...
