چکیده
Algae are sensitive to a wide range of pollutants, and are effective bioindicators in ecotoxicity assessments. Here, we evaluated the sub-lethal sensitivity of the marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides upon exposure to copper (Cu), lead (Pb), bisphenol A (BPA), and Aroclor 1016 (polychlorinated biphenyl, PCB). Toxic effects were assessed by observations of the reduction in cell counts and chlorophyll a levels after exposure to each toxicant. C. polykrikoides displayed dose-dependent, sigmoidal responses when exposed to the tested chemicals. EC 50 -72 h values for Cu, Pb, BPA, and PCB were 12.74, 46.70, 68.15, and 1.07 mg L, respectively. PCB, which is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, was the most sensitive, proving its toxic effect on the dinoflagellate. This study provides baseline data on the toxic effects of commonly used heavy metals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals to a marine dinoflagellate.

Heat Shock Protein 70 and 90 Genes in the Harmful Dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides: Genomic Structures and Transcriptional Responses to Environmental Stresses
The marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides is responsible for harmful algal blooms in aquatic environments and has spread into the world's oceans. As a microeukaryote, it seems to have distinct genomic characteristics, like gene structure and regulation. In the present study, we characterized heat shock protein (HSP) 70/90 of C. polykrikoides and evaluated their transcriptional respon...

Cochlodinium polykrikoides was bloomed in the Persian Gulf for the first time in September 2008, started from the Strait of Hormuz and then spread out towards the northern parts covering most of the areas of the Gulf and lasted 8 months. In order to find out environmental conditions during the bloom, a monthly sampling program was carried out in seven surface stations in 2008-2009. At...

To elucidate the ichthyotoxic mechanisms of a harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides, biochemical responses of fish exposed to blooms were investigated. Particularly, based on our finding that oxidative damages of gill were associated with fish mortality (J. Plankton Res. 21 (1999) 2105-2115), dysfunction of ion-transporting enzymes and secretion of gill mucus of fish exposed to this...

Antialgal activity of Zataria multiflora, Satureja khuzistanica and S. rechingeri were evaluated. These plant species are easily cultivable and their algicidal activity make them suitable candidate as biocontrol. This study aimed to identify effective algicidal compounds, practically new algicidal agents from essential oils of plants that could inhibit the growth of red tide microalgae. Prepare...
