The Eyring-Kramers formula for Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities

چکیده
The topic of this thesis is a diffusion process on a potential landscape which is given by a smooth Hamiltonian function in the regime of small noise. The work provides a new proof of the Eyring-Kramers formula for the Poincaré inequality of the associated generator of the diffusion. The Poincaré inequality characterizes the spectral gap of the generator and establishes the exponential rate of convergence towards equilibrium in the L2-distance. This result was first obtained by Bovier et. al. in 2004 relying on potential theory. The presented approach in the thesis generalizes to obtain also asymptotic sharp estimates of the constant in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. The optimal constant in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality characterizes the convergence rate to equilibrium with respect to the relative entropy, which is a stronger distance as the L2-distance and slightly weaker than the L1-distance. The optimal constant has here no direct spectral representation. The proof makes use of the scale separation present in the dynamics. The Eyring-Kramers formula follows as a simple corollary from the two main results of the work: The first one shows that the associated Gibbs measure restricted to a basin of attraction has a good Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev constants providing the fast convergence of the diffusion to metastable states. The second main ingredient is a mean-difference estimate. Here a weighted transportation distance is used. It contains the main contribution to the Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev constant, resulting from exponential long waiting times of jumps between metastable states of the diffusion.

Poincaré and Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities by Decomposition of the Energy Landscape
We consider a diffusion on a potential landscape which is given by a smooth Hamiltonian H : Rn → R in the regime of low temperature ε. We proof the Eyring-Kramers formula for the optimal constant in the Poincaré (PI) and logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) for the associated generator L = ε∆ − ∇H · ∇ of the diffusion. The proof is based on a refinement of the two-scale approach introduced by G...
متن کاملLyapunov Conditions for Logarithmic Sobolev and Super Poincaré Inequality
We show how to use Lyapunov functions to obtain functional inequalities which are stronger than Poincaré inequality (for instance logarithmic Sobolev or F -Sobolev). The case of Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities was studied in [2]. This approach allows us to recover and extend in an unified way some known criteria in the euclidean case (BakryEmery, Wang, Kusuoka-Stroock ...).
متن کاملA Poincaré Inequality on Loop Spaces
We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the L2 variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous H1 norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross [17] that the homogeneous H1 norm alone may not control the L2 norm and a potential term involving the end value of the...
متن کاملFunctional inequalities and uniqueness of the Gibbs measure — from log-Sobolev to Poincaré
In a statistical mechanics model with unbounded spins, we prove uniqueness of the Gibbs measure under various assumptions on finite volume functional inequalities. We follow Royer’s approach ([11]) and obtain uniqueness by showing convergence properties of a Glauber-Langevin dynamics. The result was known when the measures on the box [−n, n] (with free boundary conditions) satisfied the same lo...
متن کاملPseudo-Poincaré Inequalities and Applications to Sobolev Inequalities
Most smoothing procedures are via averaging. Pseudo-Poincaré inequalities give a basic L-norm control of such smoothing procedures in terms of the gradient of the function involved. When available, pseudo-Poincaré inequalities are an efficient way to prove Sobolev type inequalities. We review this technique and its applications in various geometric setups.
