The Effect of Some Anions and Cations upon the Fluxes and Net Uptake of Sodium in the Larva of Auedes Aegypti (l).

چکیده
It is now well established that the anal papillae of culicine larvae secrete salts from the dilute external medium into the body (Koch, 1938; Ramsay, 1953; Stobbart, i960). In the case of the larvae of Aides aegypti the exchange and net transport of sodium through the papillae have been studied in some detail (Treherne, 1954; Stobbart, 1959, i960) and it appears that the sodium pump in the papillae operates in conjunction with something resembling an exchange-diffusion mechanism (Stobbart, 1959, i960). The anal papillae of this species are also the site for the exchange of phosphate between body and medium (Hassett & Jenkins, 1951). The work to be described in the present paper is an attempt to characterize more closely the mechanism for sodium transport in the larva of Aides aegypti.

The effect of some anions and cations upon the fluxes and net uptake of chloride in the larva of Aëdes aegypti (L.), and the nature of the uptake mechanisms for sodium and chloride.
Some evidence concerning the influence of various ions upon the fluxes and net uptake of sodium by the aquatic larva of Aides aegypti was described in an earlier paper (Stobbart, 1965). One of the main findings was that chloride in the external medium has, in concentrations up to 5 mM/1., a marked stimulatory effect upon sodium influx and net uptake. While the sodium pump (which occurs mainly i...

As a result of numerous investigations during the last 36 years we now have a fairly detailed knowledge of the processes of ionic and osmotic regulation in freshwater mosquito larvae—mainly of Aides aegypti (Wigglesworth, 1933 a-c, 1938; Koch, 1938; Ramsay, 1950, 1951, 1953; Treherne, 1954; Stobbart, 1959, i960, 1965, 1967, 1970a, b). It has been shown that the larvae are capable of maintaining...
متن کاملGroundwater quality determination regarding major anions and cations (Case study of an aquifer in the Lut Desert, Iran)
Groundwater quality regarding major anions and cations in the Birjand Plain located in the largest desert in Eastern Iran was monitored in this study. Fifteen boreholes were considered as sampling stations and the parameters pH, TDS, EC and major anions and cations were measured in groundwater samples. The dominant groundwater types can be introduced as sodium-chloride and magnesium-sulphate. T...

متن کاملInvestigating the Effects of Two Emulsion Mulch Types on Soil Properties: A Case Study of Aran and Bidgol Desert Areas
Introduction: Wind erosion and thunderstorms bring about significant adverse consequences, including air pollution, reduced visibility, wear and tear of industrial machinery, soil structure destruction, and adverse effects on soil fertility. In recent years, the aerosol pollution caused by sand storms has turned into a serious health threat for Iranian people. In addition to being detrimental t...
