Route of Infection in Melioidosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
patients with SARS and upper respiratory symptoms might be coinfected with other respiratory viruses and become superspreaders. Interestingly, the report on a SARS superspreading event in Hong Kong explicitly states that the superspreader had presented with a “runny nose” (in addition to fever, cough, and malaise) (3). Therefore, upper respiratory symptoms might be a marker for highly infectious SARS patients. Future investigations, based upon either existing specimens from the last outbreak or newly collected specimens from any future outbreak, should focus on whether an association exits between SARS superspreading events and coinfection with other respiratory viruses.

Association between activities related to routes of infection and clinical manifestations of melioidosis
We sought associations between route of infection by Burkholderia pseudomallei and clinical manifestations in 330 cases of melioidosis in northeast Thailand using bivariate multivariable logistic regression models. Activities related to skin inoculation were negatively associated with bacteraemia, activities related to ingestion were associated with bacteraemia, and activities related to inhala...
متن کاملNasal-associated lymphoid tissue and olfactory epithelium as portals of entry for Burkholderia pseudomallei in murine melioidosis.
BACKGROUND Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is generally considered to be acquired via inhalation of dust or water droplets from the environment. In this study, we show that infection of the nasal mucosa is potentially an important portal of entry in melioidosis. METHODS After intranasal inoculation of mice, infection was monitored by bioluminescence imaging and ...
متن کاملNeurotropic Threat Characterization of Burkholderia pseudomallei Strains
The death rate for neurologic melioidosis is high. Whether certain Burkholderia pseudomallei strains are more likely than other strains to cause central nervous system infection and whether route of infection influences the neurotropic threat remain unclear. Therefore, we compared the virulence and dissemination of Australian clinical isolates collected during October 1989-October 2012 from pat...
متن کاملBichat guidelines for the clinical management of glanders and melioidosis and bioterrorism-related glanders and melioidosis.
Glanders and melioidosis are two infectious diseases that are caused by Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei respectively. Infection may be acquired through direct skin contact with contaminated soil or water. Ingestion of such contaminated water or dust is another way of contamination. Glanders and melioidosis have both been studied for weaponisation in several countries in the pa...
متن کاملEvaluation of Surrogate Animal Models of Melioidosis
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the Gram-negative bacterial pathogen responsible for the disease melioidosis. B. pseudomallei establishes disease in susceptible individuals through multiple routes of infection, all of which may proceed to a septicemic disease associated with a high mortality rate. B. pseudomallei opportunistically infects humans and a wide range of animals directly from the enviro...
متن کاملGenome-wide expression analysis of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection in a hamster model of acute melioidosis.
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis and represents a potential bioterrorism threat. In the current studies we have examined gene expression in B. pseudomallei in an animal model of acute melioidosis using whole-genome microarrays. Gene expression profiles were generated by comparing transcriptional levels of B. pseudomallei-expressed genes in infected hamster organs ...
