Heterochronic genes

چکیده
difference is the financial weakness of universities. The lack of centrally administered resources makes it much harder for universities in the UK to foster new interdisciplinary research areas, and often forces labs to do almost everything for themselves, which can result in considerable inefficiencies. For biomedical research in the UK to remain competitive, the financial health of the major research universities will need to be restored, somehow.

The Caenorhabditis elegans heterochronic gene pathway controls stage-specific transcription of collagen genes.
In Caenorhabditis elegans, the terminal differentiation of the hypodermal cells occurs at the larval-to-adult molt, and is characterized in part by the formation of a morphologically distinct adult cuticle. The timing of this event is controlled by a pathway of heterochronic genes that includes the relatively direct regulatory gene, lin-29, and upstream genes lin-4, lin-14 and lin-28. Using nor...
متن کاملHeterochronic Genes and the Nature of Developmental Time
Timing is a fundamental issue in development, with a range of implications from birth defects to evolution. In the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic genes encode components of a molecular developmental timing mechanism. This mechanism functions in diverse cell types throughout the animal to specify cell fates at each larval stage. MicroRNAs play an important role in this mecha...
متن کاملIdentification of heterochronic mutants in Caenorhabditis elegans. Temporal misexpression of a collagen::green fluorescent protein fusion gene.
The heterochronic genes lin-4, lin-14, lin-28, and lin-29 specify the timing of lateral hypodermal seam cell terminal differentiation in Caenorhabditis elegans. We devised a screen to identify additional genes involved in this developmental timing mechanism based on identification of mutants that exhibit temporal misexpression from the col-19 promoter, a downstream target of the heterochronic g...
متن کاملThe C. elegans heterochronic gene lin-46 affects developmental timing at two larval stages and encodes a relative of the scaffolding protein gephyrin.
The succession of developmental events in the C. elegans larva is governed by the heterochronic genes. When mutated, these genes cause either precocious or retarded developmental phenotypes, in which stage-specific patterns of cell division and differentiation are either skipped or reiterated, respectively. We identified a new heterochronic gene, lin-46, from mutations that suppress the precoci...

developmental timing pathway. (1) SPECIFIC AIMS Appropriate temporal patterning is essential for embryogenesis and post-embryonic development. Progression through the four larval stages in C. elegans is regulated by 'heterochronic' genes (reviewed in Slack and Ruvkun 1997; Ambros 2000). Heterochronic genes encode a diverse set of proteins, mutations in which result in the reiteration or omissio...
متن کاملDAF-12 Regulates a Connected Network of Genes to Ensure Robust Developmental Decisions
The nuclear receptor DAF-12 has roles in normal development, the decision to pursue dauer development in unfavorable conditions, and the modulation of adult aging. Despite the biologic importance of DAF-12, target genes for this receptor are largely unknown. To identify DAF-12 targets, we performed chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by hybridization to whole-genome tiling arrays. We identif...
