Bayes or determinables? What does the bidirectional hierarchical model of brain functions tell us about the nature of perceptual representation?

چکیده
Andy Clark has a mission. He has been attaching the classical/computationalist concept of representation for almost 25 years, always from different angle and always with the purpose of salvaging the concept of representation from the mistaken classical/computationalist assumptions. Unlike the new generation of anti-representationalists and enactivists who want to reject the concept of representation altogether, he wants to keep it, but he also wants to strip it from a wide variety of computationalist garments [this is the most explicit in Clark (1995, 1997), Chapter 8]. The target article is his newest attempt to do so. Clark’s argument in this paper proceeds in two steps:

The Natural Rights of Children
What does libertarian theory, Murray Rothbard’s theory in particular, tell us about the rights of children? The two foundational principles of Rothbardian libertarianism are the sanctity of private property and the rule of non-aggression. Persons, including children, are “self-owners”. Yet children, at a young age, are not yet capable of functioning fully as “self-owners.” They must be cared fo...

Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

1. Introspection and phenomenal character How much can introspection tell us about the nature of perceptual experience? This partly depends on what we understand by ‘the nature of perceptual experience’. It is hardly to be expected that introspection could tell us, for example, whether our experiences are brain states, or supervene on brain states; this is something which must be decided on the...

This talk will introduce the idea that talent development is related to learning where learning is the physiological process of neuro-plastic changes in the brain. To develop talents, individuals must move from novice or beginner’s status to expertise levels of knowledge or skills in a particular domain. Learning depends on maximizing an individual’s potential through the experience...
