Over the past few years, researchers have made significant efforts in breaking through critical bottlenecks, which impede the commercialization of Li–S batteries. Beginning with a basic introduction to Li–S systems and their associated mechanism, this review will highlight the application of one specific carbon family, nitrogen-doped carbon materials in sulfur-based cathodes. These materials will include nitrogen-doped porous carbon, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, and graphene. The article will conclude with a summary of recent research efforts in this field as well as the future prospects for the use of nitrogen-doped carbon materials in Li–S batteries.

Nitrogen doped porous carbon fibres as anode materials for sodium ion batteries with excellent rate performance.

Nitrogen-doped activated porous carbon fibres (ACFs) were prepared as anode materials for Na-ion batteries. They exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, especially rate performance. The excellent rate performance is ascribed to the fibre-like morphology and the facilitated charge transfer. The influence of nitrogen functionalities on charge transfer and electrochemical performance of N-d...

A new approach for the preparation of anodes for Li-ion batteries based on activated hard carbon cloth with pore design

We demonstrate herein the possibility to prepare carbon anodes for Li-ion batteries using simple carbonized polymeric precursors such as cotton and phenolic cloths. Activation by controlled oxidation forms highly porous carbons whose electrochemical activity in Li salt solutions is mostly an irreversible reduction of solution species and double layer charging. Treating these porous carbons by c...

Role of Nitrogen Doped Graphene for Improved High Capacity Potassium Ion Battery Anodes.

Potassium is an earth abundant alternative to lithium for rechargeable batteries, but a critical limitation in potassium ion battery anodes is the low capacity of KC8 graphite intercalation compounds in comparison to conventional LiC6. Here we demonstrate that nitrogen doping of few-layered graphene can increase the storage capacity of potassium from a theoretical maximum of 278 mAh/g in graphi...

A comparative investigation on the effects of nitrogen-doping into graphene on enhancing the electrochemical performance of SnO2/graphene for sodium-ion batteries.

SnO2/nitrogen-doped graphene nanohybrids have been synthesized by an in situ hydrothermal method, during which the formation of SnO2 nanocrystals and nitrogen doping of graphene occur simultaneously. The as-prepared SnO2/nitrogen-doped graphene nanohybrids exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance for sodium-ion batteries compared to SnO2/graphene nanocomposites. A systematic comparison betw...

Electrochemical properties of iron oxide nanoparticles as an anode for Li-ion batteries

The synthesis of iron oxide nano-particles by direct thermal decomposition was studied. Simultaneous thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed the formation of iron-urea complex, and disclosed iron oxide formation mechanism. Calcination of the iron-urea complex at 200°C and 250°C for 2 hrs. resulted in the formation of maghemite along with hematite as a seco...
