Solution Behavior of the Transient Heat Transfer Problem in Thermoelectric Shape Memory Alloy Actuators

چکیده
The main purpose of this paper is to study the solution behavior of the transient heat transfer problem for one-dimensional symmetric thermoelectric shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators. It is proved that for the transient cooling problem with constant electric current density of magnitude |J | there is a value J0 of |J | such that when |J | < J0, the temperature in SMA is always decreasing to its steady state, and when |J | > J0, the temperature in SMA may not be always decreasing, which is an important property of thermoelectric SMA actuators reported by Lagoudas and Ding [Internat. J. Engrg. Sci., 33 (1995), pp. 2345–2364]. A lower bound of J0 is given. The physical implications of main results are also discussed.

A combined theoretical/experimental study of the heat transfer in thermoelectric Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators is undertaken in this paper. A one-dimensional model of a thermoelectric unit cell with a SMA junction is developed rst and the transient temperatures in the SMA are evaluated for di erent applied electric current densities. As a rst step towards the design of an actuator, a therm...

In this paper, a transient, two-dimensional and nonlinear inverse heat conduction problem in solidification process is considered. Genetic algorithm is applied for the identification of the interfacial heat transfer coefficients during squeeze casting of commercial aluminum alloy (Al-4.5wt%Cu) by assuming a priori information regarding the functional form of the unknown heat transfer coefficien...

متن کاملThermoelectric Shape Memory Alloy Actuators and the Issue of Thermomechanical Coupling
In this work, we model a thermoelectric shape memory alloy(SMA) actuator as part of a research effort to design high-force, high-frequency SMA actuators. Cyclic phase transformation in a SMA layer is achieved by alternately heatinglc6oling using the thermoelectric Peltier effect. The thermal and mechanical fields during phase transformation are, in general, highly coupled and the extent of this...
متن کاملExperimental Hysteresis Identification and Micro-position Control of a Shape-Memory-Alloy Rod Actuator
In order to exhaustively exploit the high-level capabilities of shape memory alloys (SMAs), they must be applied in control systems applications. However, because of their hysteretic inherent, dilatory response, and nonlinear behavior, scientists are thwarted in their attempt to design controllers for actuators of such kind. The current study aims at developing a micro-position control system ...
