The Behavior of the Nucleic Acids during the Early Development of the Sea Urchin Egg (arbacia)
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. The unfertilized Arbacia egg contains an average of 20gamma x 10(-3) ribonucleic acid and 0.7 to 1gamma x 10(-3) desoxyribonucleic acid. 2. During the first 24 hours of development, the amount of ribonucleic acid per embryo remains practically unchanged whereas that of desoxyribonucleic acid steadily increases. At the end of this period, the amount of desoxyribonucleic acid per embryo is 10 to 15 times larger than that of the unfertilized egg.

Calcium-binding modulator protein from the unfertilized egg of the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata
We have purified and partly characterized a calcium-binding protein from the unfertilized egg of the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata. This protein closely resembles the calcium-binding modulator protein of bovine brain in its molecular weight, electrophoretic mobility, amino acid analysis, and peptide map. It activates bovine brain phosphodiesterase in the presence of calcium but has no effect on...
متن کاملAn ultracytochemical study of the respiratory potency, integrity, and fate of the sea urchin sperm mitochondria during early embryogenesis
Cytochrome oxidase activity via cytochrome c, as demonstrated by the diaminobenzidine procedure, has been employed in this electron microscope cytochemical study to determine the respiratory potency, integrity and fate of the Arbacia sperm mitochondrion at fertilization and during early embryogenesis. The sperm mitochondrion remained intact and was intensely positive for cytochrome oxidase acti...
متن کاملUptake of Deuterium into Proteins of Fertilized and Unfertilized Arbacia Eggs Suspended in Heavy Water
When fertilized and unfertilized eggs of Arbacia punctulata are suspended in heavy water, deuterium is incorporated into stable positions in the egg proteins. The rate of incorporation of the isotope is considerably greater in fertilized than in unfertilized eggs, and is accelerated at the time of formation of the blastula. The result of calculation of the maximum deuterium concentration which ...
متن کاملEffects of Salinity on Embryonic and Early Larval Development of a Tropical Sea Urchin, Salmacis sphaeroides
Effects of salinity on fertilization, embryonic stage, and early larval development and growth performances of short-spined white sea urchin, Salmacis sphaeroides were conducted under a controlled laboratory condition. The experiment was carried out with seven salinity treatments (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 PSU), each of which was triplicated. Significantly highest fertilization success was ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Penicillin on Eggs of the Sea Urchin, Arbacia Punctulata
1. Penicillin in the range of concentration from 250 U/ml. to approximately 2650 U/ml. inhibits the rate of cell division of the fertilized sea urchin egg from 0 to 100 per cent. 2. Penicillin in the same range of concentrations has no effect on the oxygen consumption of the unfertilized or the fertilized eggs. 3. Penicillin is bound by some component of the sea urchin egg in amounts sufficient...
