What questions mean By Paul Hagstrom

چکیده
1. Introduction and statement of purpose The semantics of questions is a fabulously complex area of research with a very active literature and no shortage of theoretical positions often differentiated by seemingly minute details. My goal in this article is necessarily somewhat modest: to introduce some basic concepts in order to highlight some of the issues and discoveries that have been occupying the recent literature on the semantics of questions. At the same time, I aim to keep the discussion accessible to those who are just poking their heads in to see what we're up to over here. There are three recent handbook that can provide a better historical perspective and a broader look at the sub-field at large. Corners will be cut here, and some approaches and results will undeservedly not be covered at all.

Decomposing Questions
The primary proposal of this thesis that in questions, a “Q” morpheme must undergo syntactic movement from a clause-internal position to a clause-peripheral position. Throughout this thesis, we develop a syntactic analysis and a semantic formalism for questions that accounts for the facts observed in wh-in-situ languages (focusing mainly on Japanese, Sinhala, Shuri Okinawan, and premodern Japan...

متن کامل1 Roots , Constituents , and C - Command
At the core of syntactic theory is the question of how grammatical structures are properly characterized. It has long been clear that sentences have constituents and hierarchical structure, and these abstract structures have generally been described in terms of trees such as the one shown in (1) for the surface string BDE separable into two constituents, B and DE, where B is hierarchically supe...
