چکیده

This paper presents a method to compute curvatures of a surface patch S obtained from a degenerate representation defined over a rectangular domain. To compute curvatures at a point 4 in S where the surface representation is degenerate one has to assume that the point sef S has a tangent plane and well defined curvatures at the point 4 where the curvatures are to be computed. Our computation method employs a local height function representation of S in a neighborhood of the point 4 where the height function h is defined over the tangent plane of S at the point 4. In our method the second order partial derivatives of the height function /I at 4 are computed by using second order derivatives of any three surfaces curves on S which end up in (I with pairwise linearly independent tangent directions. The curvature entities of S at 4 are then computed by using the second order partial derivatives of the height function h at 4. We also show how the method is extended to compute partial derivatives of any order of the function II at 4. For this purpose we show (in Theorem I) how the partial derivatives up to nth order of a surface at a point 4 can be computed using derivatives up to order n of n + 1 surface curves emanating from 4. We also present a definition of a concept of generalized surface curvatures under weaker assumptions appropriate for degenerate surfaces. Under those weaker assumptions one does not require a locally C’-smooth height function representation of the surface over the tangent plane at the degenerate point Q, nor a locally well defined (single-valued) height function representation of the surface in a neighborhood of the point 4. One only needs the existence of a unique local second order approximation of the degenerate surface with a quadratic function defined over the tangent plane at 4. The surface curvatures of the corresponding approximating quadratic surface then define the curvatures of the approximated degenerate surface in the contact point Q.

Subdivision Algorithms and Convexity Analysis for Rational Bézier Triangular Patches

Triangular surfaces are important because in areas where the geometry is not similar to rectangular domain, the rectangular surface patch will collapse into a triangular patch. In such a case, one boundary edge may collapse into a boundary vertex of the patch, giving rise to geometric dissimilarities (e.g. shape parameters, Gaussian curvature distribution, cross boundary continuities etc.) and ...

From Degenerate Patches to Triangular and Trimmed Patches

CAD systems are usually based on a tensor product representation of free form surfaces. In this case, trimmed patches are used for modeling non rectangular zones. Trimmed patches provide a reasonable solution for the representation of general topologies, provided that the gap between equivalent trimming curves in the euclidean space is small enough. Several commercial CAD systems, however, repr...

Construction of rational surface patches bounded by lines of curvature

The fact that the Darboux frame is rotation–minimizing along lines of curvature of a smooth surface is invoked to construct rational surface patches whose boundary curves are lines of curvature. For given patch corner points and associated frames defining the surface normals and principal directions, the patch boundaries are constructed as quintic RRMF curves, i.e., spatial Pythagorean–hodograp...

Degenerate polynomial patches of degree 11 for almost <Emphasis Type="Italic">GC </Emphasis> <Superscript>2 </Superscript> interpolation over triangles

We consider the problem of interpolating scattered data in R 3 by an almost geometrically smooth GC 2 surface, where almost GC 2 means GC 2 except in a finite number of points (the vertices), where the surface is GC 1. A local method is proposed, based on employing so-called degenerate triangular Bernstein-B6zier patches. We give an analysis of quintic patches for GC I and patches of degree ele...

Principal Patches for Computational Geometry

This thesis presents a new class of surface patches for the creation of sculptured surfaces in mechanical engineering applications of computer aided design. Ideas from differential geometry are used to create principal patches whose edges are lines of curvature. This is done by ensuring that the sides obey two equations called the frame matching and position matching conditions. It is shown tha...
