چکیده

Discrete models have a long tradition in engineering, including finite state machines, Boolean networks, Petri nets, and agent-based models. Of particular importance is the question of how the model structure constrains its dynamics. This paper discusses an algebraic framework to study such questions. The systems discussed here are given by mappings on an affine space over a finite field, whose coordinate functions are polynomials. They form a general class of models which can represent many discrete model types. Assigning to such a system its dependency graph, that is, the directed graph that indicates the variable dependencies, provides a mapping from systems to graphs. A basic property of this mapping is derived and used to prove that dynamical systems with an acyclic dependency graph can only have a unique fixed point in their phase space and no periodic orbits. This result is then applied to a published model of in vitro virus competition. ∗This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Nr. CMMI-0908201.

Dynamical Behavior of a Rigid Body with One Fixed Point (Gyroscope). Basic Concepts and Results. Open Problems: a Review

The study of the dynamic behavior of a rigid body with one fixed point (gyroscope) has a long history. A number of famous mathematicians and mechanical engineers have devoted enormous time and effort to clarify the role of dynamic effects on its movement (behavior) – stable, periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic. The main objectives of this review are: 1) to outline the characteristic features of...

Dynamical distance as a semi-metric on nuclear conguration space

In this paper, we introduce the concept of dynamical distance on a nuclear conguration space. We partition the nuclear conguration space into disjoint classes. This classification coincides with the classical partitioning of molecular systems via the concept of conjugacy of dynamical systems. It gives a quantitative criterion to distinguish dierent molecular structures.

Polynomial chaos based uncertainty quantification in Hamiltonian, multi-time scale, and chaotic systems

Polynomial chaos is a powerful technique for propagating uncertainty through ordinary and partial differential equations. Random variables are expanded in terms of orthogonal polynomials and differential equations are derived for the expansion coefficients. Here we study the structure and dynamics of these differential equations when the original system has Hamiltonian structure, has multiple t...

On the Algebraic Geometry of Polynomial Dynamical Systems

This paper focuses on polynomial dynamical systems over finite fields. These systems appear in a variety of contexts, in computer science, engineering, and computational biology, for instance as models of intracellular biochemical networks. It is shown that several problems relating to their structure and dynamics, as well as control theory, can be formulated and solved in the language of algeb...

Polynomial Dynamical Systems in Systems Biology

Research in systems biology focuses on the prediction and control of the behavior of biochemical networks through the use of mathematical models that accurately capture the responses of the network to certain types of perturbations. The construction of models based on the observations of these responses, referred to as reverse engineering, is an important step in discovering the structure and d...
