Dilution of Aircraft Exhaust Plumes at Cruise Altitudes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dilution of jet engine exhaust in the plume behind cruising aircraft is determined from measured plume properties. The data set includes in situ measurements of CO 2 , NO, NO y , SO 2 , H 2 O, temperature, and contrail diameters behind subsonic and supersonic aircraft in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, for plume ages of seconds to hours. The set of data is extended into the range of milliseconds based on computations and measured temperature values. The bulk plume dilution is expressed in terms of the dilution ratio N which is the mass of air with which the exhaust from a unit mass of burned fuel mixes. For: 0.006 s(t(104 s, the bulk dilution ratio measured in more than 70 plume encounters follows approximately N"7000 (t/t 0 )0.8, t 0 "1 s. ( 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Measurements of HONO, NO, NOy and SO2 in aircraft exhaust plumes at cruise
[1] Measurements of gaseous nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions in young aircraft exhaust plumes give insight into chemical oxidation processes inside aircraft engines. Particularly, the OH‐induced formation of nitrous acid (HONO) from nitrogen oxide (NO) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) from sulfur dioxide (SO2) inside the turbine which is highly uncertain, need detailed analysis to address the clima...
متن کاملAircraft Contrails Factsheet
1EPA 2Printed on paper that contains at least 30 percent postconsumer fiber. 1 This fact sheet focuses on contrails produced by aircraft engine exhaust. However, the term " contrail " is also used to refer to the short trails sometimes briefly appearing over aircraft wings or engine propellers, especially under mild, humid conditions. These contrails consist entirely of atmospheric water that c...
متن کاملEffects of plume-scale versus grid-scale treatment of aircraft exhaust photochemistry
[1] This is a study to examine the impact of modeling photochemistry from aircraft emissions in an expanding plume versus at the grid scale in an atmospheric model. Differences in model treatments for a single flight occurred at all altitudes during takeoff, cruise, and landing. After 10 h, the plume treatment decreased grid-scale ozone production by 33%, methane destruction by 30%, and carbon ...
متن کاملTrailing Vortex Wake Encounters at Altitude - A Potential Flight Safety Issue?
The potential hazard of one aircraft encountering the trailing vortex wake of another aircraft during either take-off or landing is well known. The wake vortex hazard in the terminal area has been virtually eliminated using the operational procedures and aircraft separation criteria mandated by the air traffic authorities. This paper presents arguments that wake encounters at cruise altitude ar...
متن کاملReducing the climate change impacts of aviation by restricting cruise altitudes
Two of the ways in which air travel affects climate are the emission of carbon dioxide and the creation of high-altitude contrails. The latter have been found to potentially play a major role in climate change accounting for the largest impact from the aviation sector. One possible strategy for reducing the impact of air travel on climate change is to significantly reduce the formation of contr...
