چکیده

The performance and application of a multlchannel, ground-based microwave radiometer in the monilori:rg of Fohn wind was studied in an experiment conducted in Hong Kong in 2004. Three scanning modes (zenith, elevation and 15degree elevation) were tried out fo: the radiometer to monitor lhe low-level temperature inversions upwiad of the hills. Thermodynamic profiles retrieved from the zenith mode compared the best with the :adiosonde measwements. For inversions associated with low clouds, an empirical method based on saturation temperature appeared to improve temperatre retrieval. When placed downwind of the hills, the radiometer captured very well the warming and drying of the boundary layer as a result of Fohn wind. The frequency spectrum of the brightness temperature from the radiorneter was found to follow a -5l3 law. A quantity dervied from the specarum tumed out to vary in a manner similar to the intensity of air turbulence in a strong Fdha wind case. Determination of Richardson number profile from remote sensing data and its aviation application

A number of remote-sensing wind-measuring instruments, such as LIDAR and radar wind profilers, have been set up in the vicinity of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for monitoring of low-level windshear and turbulence. The combined usage of wind data from a radar wind profiler and boundary layer temperature profiles from a ground-based microwave radiometer in turbulence application is ...

Application of a ground-based, multi-channel microwave radiometer to the alerting of low-level windshear at an airport

Low-level windshear, which refers to sustained changes of headwind of 15 knots (7.7 m/s) or more over a distance of several hundred metres to about 4 km, could be hazardous to the aircraft flying close to the ground. This paper presents the preliminary results in the application of a radiometer in the alerting of lowlevel windshear. A ground-based, 14-channel microwave radiometer (7 oxygen chan...

Application of microwave radiometer and wind profiler data in the estimation of wind gust associated with intense convective weather

Estimates of the wind gusts associated with intense convective weather could be obtained using empirical relationships such as GUSTEX based on radiosonde measurements. However, such data are only available a couple of times a day and may not reflect the rapidly changing atmospheric condition in spring and summer times. The feasibility of combining the thermodynamic profiles from a ground-based ...

Performance and application of a multi-wavelength, ground-based microwave radiometer in intense convective weather

Thermodynamic and dynamic quantities, such as the K-index and GUSTEX (a wind gust estimate), are commonly used in the nowcasting of intense convective weather. In the past, they were derived from conventional upper-air ascent measurements, which were normally only available twice a day. In the tropics, the thermodynamic property of the troposphere could change rapidly in rain episodes and the c...

Reprint 889 Performance of Instability Indices of the Troposphere as Derived from a Ground-based Microwave Radiometer

The ground-based microwave radiometer provides a unique opportunity to continuously derive instability indices of the troposphere based on the temperature and humidity profiles. In the present study, three different kinds of instability indices are considered: (a) based on the temperature and dew point values at selected levels only, e.g. K index, (b) based on the energy available for convectiv...
