Tumours Produced in Hamsters by Benzpyrene

چکیده
meantime by Gye and Foulds ( 1) no observations on this animal have been recorded. We used the Syrian, or golden, hamster ( Cricctus auratus), of which one strain is bred in our laboratory. Animals weighing about 80 gm. were injected subcutaneously, in the abdominal region, with benzpyrene Meurice, 0.25 C.C. of a solution in lard, every three or four weeks, the injections being interrupted as soon as a tumour became apparent. Forty animals were treated between Nov. 6, 1935, and April 28, 1938. Nine died within the first three months of treatment. Of the 31 remaining, 29, or 93 per cent, developed tumours. The earliest beginning of a tumour can not usually be established with certainty, for infiltrations forming after injection may be misleading. Definite tumours may appear after two months, but the average period is three months.

Comparatively little has been published on the use of the hamster in cancer research and only two reports, including some 15 instances, of spontaneous tumors are available (1, 9). The earliest experimental work appears to be Gye and Fould's (9) production of a mixed-cell sarcoma in two males by injecting 3,4-benzpyrene, in 1939. A year later Halberstaedter (11) reported the production of a simi...

It has been apparent since early in the history of cancer research that the study and experimental therapy of human cancer might be considerably advanced if the neoplasms could be grown outside of the body of the cancer patient. Besides tissue culture in vitro, there is the possibility of growth of tumor transplants in host animals. Experimental ly, this problem resolves itself into that of the...
متن کاملThe effect of benzpyrene, phenobarbital, and carbon tetrachloride on subcellular metal distribution and microsomal enzyme activity.
Alterations in the normal subcellular metal distribution of rat liver and lung have been produced by the acute administration of phénobarbital, carbon tetrachloride, and intratracheal 3,4-benzpyrene. Following the isolation of the various subcellular fractions by a standard technique, the metal composition of the subfractions was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and expressed ...
