چکیده

Two Bos taurus breeds with known differences in heat tolerance were tested under controlled conditions to evaluate heat tolerance. Romosinuano (Romo) is a tropically adapted breed. Nine Angus (304 ± 7 Kg BW) and nine RO (285 ± 7.5 Kg BW) steers from USDA-ARS, Brooksville, Florida, were transported to the Brody Environmental Center at the University of Missouri. Steers were housed for 14 days at thermoneutrality (21°C; TN) before 14 days of cyclic heat stress (HS; 26°C night; 36°C day). Rectal temperature and respiration rate were measured six times daily. Sweat rates at shaved sites were recorded on specific days. Blood samples were taken once a week. The Romo maintained a significantly lower respiration rate (20 bpm), sweat rate (6 g/mh), and rectal temperature (0.5°C) than Angus throughout TN. Both breeds increased sweat rate, respiration rate, and rectal temperature during HS, with Angus retaining the higher levels. There were breed differences for serum prolactin, leptin, creatinine, and cholesterol, with Angus being higher than Romo. Serum leptin increased for both breeds with HS. Although there were no breed differences at TN, Angus steers exhibited HS-induced increases in prolactin, creatinine, and cholesterol. However, these measures for Romo were unaffected by HS. The present study has identified additional physiological and endocrine markers that may aide in the identification of Bos taurus sensitivity to heat. The reasons for these changes during heat stress remain to be determined.

Evaluation of physiological and blood serum differences in heat-tolerant (Romosinuano) and heat-susceptible (Angus) Bos taurus cattle during controlled heat challenge.

A study was performed to evaluate differences in thermoregulatory ability of 2 Bos taurus breeds with known differences in heat tolerance. Nine Angus (AG; 304 +/- 7 kg of BW) and 9 Romosinuano (RO; 285 +/- 7.5 kg of BW) steers were transported to the Brody Environmental Center at the University of Missouri. Steers were housed for 18 d at thermoneutrality (TN; 21 degrees C) before initiation of ...

Differences in heat tolerance between preimplantation embryos from Brahman, Romosinuano, and Angus breeds.

Exposure to 41 degrees C reduces development of embryos of heat-sensitive breeds (Holstein and Angus) more than for embryos of the heat-tolerant Brahman breed. Here it was tested whether embryonic resistance to heat shock occurs for a thermotolerant breed of different genetic origin than the Brahman. In particular, the thermal sensitivity of in vitro produced embryos of the Romosinuano, a Bos t...

Identification of bovine, ovine and caprine pure and binary mixtures of raw and heat processed meats using species specific size markers targeting mitochondrial genome

A specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was applied for identification of bovine (Bos taurus), ovine (Ovis aries) and caprine (Capra hircus) pure and binary mixtures of raw and heat-processed meats. These meats are used in food industry products and/or for direct consumption of consumers. The mitochondrial DNA was amplified as a template in a PCR reaction by use of specific primers re...

The influence of tropical adaptation on plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I in purebred and crossbred beef cattle.

In an effort to determine whether tropical adaptation influences circulating concentrations of the growth-related hormone IGF-I, 3-breed diallel matings were conducted using temperate Bos taurus (Angus), tropical Bos indicus (Brahman), and tropical Bos taurus (Romosinuano). Purebred Angus, Braham, and Romosinuano and crossbred Angus-Braham, Angus-Romosinuano, and Braham-Romosinuano heifers and ...

Differences in Beef Quality between Angus (Bos taurus taurus) and Nellore (Bos taurus indicus) Cattle through a Proteomic and Phosphoproteomic Approach

Proteins are the major constituents of muscle and are key molecules regulating the metabolic changes during conversion of muscle to meat. Brazil is one of the largest exporters of beef and most Brazilian cattle are composed by zebu (Nellore) genotype. Bos indicus beef is generally leaner and tougher than Bos taurus such as Angus. The aim of this study was to compare the muscle proteomic and pho...
